One of the number one rules of survival is never to over pack, bring what you need and that is that.
One firearm for emergencies, a Melee weapon for most shamblers and some water and/or rations if it's going to be a long journey.

I live pretty much in the middle of no-where, first thing I'd do if it were to happen is to GTFO of here, fields all around, no attic and no chance lol.
It's about 10 miles to the closest town, so I'd head in the opposite direction assuming I didn't need supplies.
There's a light house about a mile out to sea around here too, I'd head to that I think.
In movies the only restriction on guns and ammo is the scriptwriters imagination.
In real, you'd be f&%(*^ for ammo, and carrying 5 guns, with 5 guns worth of ammo wouldn't be good either.. Stick to one, and have a lot of magazines if anything. Anyways going into towns/cities to go collect ammo probably wouldn't do you any good..
Anyhows, weaponry and safety is all situational. Depends on what kinda zombies we're talking about. I personally put default zombies as "Resident Evil" type.. Not the "Rage" 28 days later type.. The "Smart Zombies" from land of the dead is ***.. Dawn of the dead zombies are like resi I guess.. but, the whole "Hell is full so the dead walk the earth" storyline is ***..

I don't know know many people would have access to high powered rifles though.
I still say Shotgun + Knife would be highly survivable. You generally don't need to aim as precisely as you would with a handgun and you would be a benefit from the larger spread if you encountered large groups. You could breach large locked doors with the shotgun too.

I wish I could rename this thread, because it has turned into something of epic proportions.
My take on the whole Zombie Apocalypse thing is as follow:
1. Find Flion (I live near him and he knows a disturbing amount about Zombies)
2. Find John Webb and mutilate his family regardless of if they're Zombies or not. Personal Issues >.>
3. Use the spare time that I'll surely have to learn Japanese, learn how to do a cool matrix backflip off a wall (>.>), and find a source other than the internet for sexual gratification.
