A shotgun is a pretty solid defense against any kind of zombie attack. It could double as a melee weapon. I'd take it over the M1 on the cover of the Zombie Survival Guide.
Robots pose a greater threat then zombies though.
Armor Plating > Zombie Flesh.

TBH if you were going into a heavily populated area where it would be impossible to avoid detection, a fire-arm would be better assuming it was fairly quiet (High powered rifles, or silenced pistols)

A shotgun can only be used in close situations, and most of the time unless your prepared with a blunt object being that close isn't good.
An M4A1 Rifle can be used near silently with a silencer and pick off zombies from a distance, clearing a path.
I'd still prefer a gun rather then let them get close enough to be able to use a knife/bat.
I don't like it when zombies invade my personal bubble.

And @ spence: There will be times where you'll have to leave your safe haven in the search of food, supplies or other necessities, Having a plan for going through an Urban centre is crucial, even if it'll be seldom used
