I'm not sure if it's completely beaten, but Obama said the White house won't support the SOPA bill so... the hearing on JAN 18th was postponed, I guess. I don't know how reliable this is since someone on skype linked me but here's the article.

Did anyone else notice that they only pursued him in this fashion after he started up another site and antagonized them?

Quote:
Mr O'Dwyer's site was shut down by US authorities as part of a crackdown by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. But he soon re-opened it at a different address and is alleged to have posted the message: "F**k the police" on its front page.

As for SOPA I'm against it. While I do think some remedies should be available to prevent pirating and the like, this seems to far over reach that goal.

I would guess that only the large content owners with the resources will decide which sites gets the shaft. They will demand compensation for damages "or else". Who is going to make sure these companies aren't abusing their power? Will it be congress? (clueless morons). Some appointed team of easily bought government officials?

All these problems are created to try to stop piracy. /smh

I have considered in doing something for FFXIAH in the spirit of raising awareness of the issue.
You should, even it's just a small link on the front page linking to this thread or something similar.

Yeah then apparently they said they were sorry and opposed SOPA in its current form, but believed in its idea and got back even more registrations, so stupid.

though the second article is from earlier so maybe they got into trouble again.

Ya know, no matter how much we all are against it, PIPA and SOPA are gonna eventually pass.

Just because SOPA is shelved doesn't mean it's dead. They're gonna pass it in a few months once people forget about it.

Welcome to US politics.

Even if it did pass sometime in the future, do the people of this forum really think such an invasive law wouldn't be challenged by today's techno-obsessed youth culture?

There are many things I can see going under the radar of the American people but when you cant get onto Facebook or Youtube, you've crossed the line and there would be repercussions.

If SOPA and PROTECT IP pass, I can so see the youth of USA rise up against the government.

If they do, I suggest this be the theme song:

nothing will stop pirates: locks only keep honest people honest

You know when I heard about all that leave goDaddy stuff and when that day came I remember hearing something about [goDaddy] requiring ID's to change registrars.

Interesting, I wonder if I'll have to do the same to transfer registrars. I use a different service [not goDaddy] and will be switching to something cheaper.

Wordpress is allowing their bloggers to black out individual blogs in protest as well. I have arranged to black mine out. If anyone else here is a blogger on wordpress, I encourage you to, as well! You can also choose to just display a ribbon if you like, instead engaging in the full black out.

I know that not all blogs get a lot of attention. Mine has a very small audience as well, but still. Any awareness we raise about it at all will help.

I think they are referring to the EPP code which is normal and not new. It's a unique key to give to your new registrar so that the old one can verify that you authorized the transfer.

As for the video, I read the article he is referencing. Even if SOPA/PIPA is a red herring, it doesn't mean the people shouldn't publicly oppose it. They will pass if they want and it's worse than the ICANN thing. I will paste a quote from spolsky on HN in response to the article.

Quote:
TL;DR - Adam is saying that the new top-level domains will require that you prove your identity when you register with them.
First of all, I don't see any evidence of that. None of the links that he provides include any such claim.
Second, he is claiming this only applies to the new global top level domains. So, who cares? Nobody's going to use those anyway. They're going the way of .biz and .info -- a permanently boring ghetto.
Adam also says "The entire reason for even trying to get a DNS provision into law is because it is nearly impossible to track down the owner of a website, or domain name, through today's registration tools."
That's not, actually, the reason. The reason to get the DNS provision into law is to shut down websites operated from outside the United States where the US does not have jurisdiction.
It is relatively easy for law enforcement to track down the owner of a domain. It resolves to an IP address. The IP address is routed by hardware. The hardware is located in physical space. As long as it's all in the United States, it's just not that hard to find the operator of a website based on the domain name, and that is not what the entertainment lobby is concerned about. They are concerned with what happens when the operator is outside the US and they don't have jurisdiction, so they want laws passed to ensure that US-based ISPs are obliged to block access to foreign infringers.
Adam's analysis in this case is flat-out wrong.
