Reddit is blacking out their site for 12 hours in protest. Nice gesture, but not a big enough website, as I've never gone there I just read this in news. Hopefully bigger websites like Google might do the same, but that's wishful thinking.
Reddit is pretty big. There's talks that other, even larger websites may follow. Facebook was in the talks for this, too, last I checked.
I really hope Google does because even the shortest margin of time would be a huge hit to businesses that support the act.

If Facebook did this, it'd rally the FB addicts into action. :P
lets be honest here, most ppl who see anti piracy laws are like oh noez I wont be able to torrent my bleach or the new lil wayne CD. very few ppl see the big picture that something like this could kill the internet as we know it
Not exactly on SOPA subject, but lately my ISP has been sending me an email every time I download a Bleach episode saying it's illegal but they won't sue me or anything for it.
Wish they would stop stalking what I do and stop spamming my inbox I received 20 emails the other day because I wasn't up to date on the episodes ...
If this passes, combined with NDAA which was already passed, the government will be unstoppable (if it wasn't already). Think of the possibilities... The federal government could indefinitely detain you with no trial for hosting or maybe even posting any content deemed unfit. So then you could be labeled a terrorist without ever doing anything related to terrorism and you don't even have to leave your house.
Sounds like a great plan.
I better start reading up on how the citizens of Iran, North Korea, and China live under this type of government. Where expressing your ideas could possible get you arrested, indefinitely held, and possibly tortured just for disagreeing with those in charge.
you need to actually read what the NDAA legally allows the government to do instead of buying into the hype...
I am dissapoint in you
as for fascism, while fighting against it is great too few politicians do, Ron Paul is too much of a nut who doesn't understand reality or history in other areas however...
SOPA and PIPA will give power to MPAA, RIAA, and other copyright owners that have the resources to take down a site if they contain or even link to infringing material without any due process. Basically they can wipe your DNS record legally if they don't think you are not doing enough to police your website. Websites will have to scan every user submitted content and hire a team of lawyers. Small websites don't have the resources to do this and large websites will just pass the expense to it's visitors. All this crap so that maybe they can make more money on the box office.
The ridiculous thing is this won't even not stop piracy.
Watch the video below:
Infographic:
So wikis, forums, file hosts (think rapidshare), social networks will either cease to exist or cripple your ability to provide links, images, videos until it's approved or not at all.
Congress is elected to support the interests of it's constituents not large content owners. Most that oppose this bill do not advocate piracy but that this bill is open to abuse, and they will abuse it.
they are trying to hold on to a dead business model, just like several other companies are in their respective fields and not giving the users what they want or even offering it, people will seek it elsewhere legal or not eventually.
like I know technically me watching/downloading english subbed bleach (running example) is illegal, I still do it because the english version is ***and they won't legally offer it here.
People in the gaming industry, at least some I'm sure understand what it means to give the consumer what they want as it is the consumer as to what created them, however money talks and they fail to realize that their business models decay.
Or some companies try to advance too fast and ignore their customers ie: netflix.
I'd admit I haven't read the specifics of the NDAA and yeah I know the power was pretty much there already, but let's turn our attention back to just SOPA lol.

the thing is it doesn't grant them that power... the thread about it has a link to the legal review of it.
but sopa yeah it needs to be stopped, hopefully google will take on the MPAA, if they can block this legislation in a few years google could buy up most of the MPAA anyway...
Kill the bills major supporters with a buy out, go google take over everything!
It will inform you about the bills and why they are bad and also give you ways to voice your opposition. The simple thing you can do click the share on facebook/twitter.
The next hearing of SOPA is on Jan 18th. The founder of reddit (among others in the tech industry) will be there to address the committee. I believe that reddit.com is planning a blackout on that date as well. Feel free to correct me if I don't have my facts straight.

Sounds about right and makes sense that they would do it on the 18th then.
Bigger companies like Facebook and Google need to join in as well.

No, you're right. They'll be blacking out for 12hrs on January 18th.
Used this site. Riot games (People who do League of Legends) are making a large effort to inform their player base of this and have them take action. That link was on their website, and they have their attorney on Reddit spreading the word and looking for ideas on how to spread the information.
I don't know been along time since ive watched a good movie, But passing the NDAA... Indeffinite detention, Military police and no "Habeas Corpus". Isn't this the part of the Movie where the country becomes a militia with guns and burns down the whitehouse?
They don't even read the bills they sign in. What makes you think they will read a letter from someone?
Angry Joe sent a letter to John McCain about the issue and got back a canned response telling him nicely to *** off and that the bill will make like a trillion new jobs and save the planet.
Yes, if this passes and movies and such start making more money, I'm sure the very first thing they will go out and do is hire more people. I mean when you make billions of dollars, I guess you need to make a billion and 1 dollars before you can hire more people.
I'm going to start telling everyone I know that knows how to operate a computer (you'd be surprised how many people I know don't know how to) about this and try to get them to send those e-mails too.
I sent an email, trying to get everyone I know to send one too. Also, dunno if it's been posted before, but this video might help explain some things incase people don't get it? (It seemed to help a few people I talk to, so It can't hurt?<.<)
So, someone reported he would likely veto it, and you linked an article that shrugs off and disregards the reporter and makes stupid connections and claims?
Personally anyone voting for this bill simply wants their pockets full of cash or has no idea what they are voting on. Either way they are disregarding the majority of peoples rights and should be removed from office. I plan voting against them when time comes.
