We focus on retribution. Guy stabbed you. Cops arrest guy. You still got stabbed. There is nothing in the universe that is going to unstab you.

We need to prevent the problem that lead to the stab. not kill the guy after you already got stabbed. That in no way helps you after you've been stabbed.
