Kingdom hearts would've been such a masterpiece, if it wasn't for them meddling disney characters.
hands down, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War was the best iv seen
FF9 FF10 were pretty good. Even FF13 wasnt bad. Star ocean series are nice to, since u can have so many diffrent endings. Ragnarok.Kongming said: » I loved FF8's ending because I'm a sucker for time travel/causal loops o_o It all just really tied together nicely. It's not my favorite FF by a long shot but I think it easily has the best ending. I think generally this is a difficult question because my favorite games don't necessarily have the best endings. I think it figures because a good game is a game you don't really want to see end, and I'm not even sure if the best possible ending for a great game can't help but come across as anticlimactic. FFXII. I want to play it forever. Such a beautiful world. Also, all Zelda game endings are the same. Windwaker is my favourite, and stabbing Ganondorf in the face and turning him to stone as Hyrule floods permanently is epic, but I just saw my girlfriend play OOT (I made her replay classics) and realize you also stab Ganon in the face several times at the end, and you probably also stab every other form of Ganon in the face in every other game. Seriously, those games are rehashes, which was fine from 8 bit -> 16 bit -> 3D -> better 3D era, but afterwards it's the same game over and over. It's time to innovate, and maybe stab him someplace else next time. (Stabbing is a metaphor in that latter comment; it's epic as f*ck every time and it should always happen. But the games need to change besides). Edit: This rehash applies to all games that spanned eras, particularly Nintendo. Tell me Metroid Prime wasn't Super Metroid 3D, or Ocarina wasn't ALTTP 3D. More edit: not that there's ANYTHING wrong with that, because those games are the best games ever. It's probably assumed that the average person will only play one iteration of a franchise, which is why the same old formula gets recycled for new generations. I have nothing against it, and often enjoy a new take on the same old formula.
Windwaker for instance (HIGH FIVE) is just damn awesome. Sure, you stab Ganon in the face in every reincarnation, but how many times do you do it underneath the ocean, which is collapsing around you? Brb cleaning pants My favorites have to be the main Metal Gear Solid series, especially the final boss of MGS3. Those games were absoutely fantastic.
I remember really liking FFT's conclusion too; there's a nostalgic thing for me with Final Fantasy I's ending. But, I forgot to mention, Kingdom hearts: Birth by sleep had an incredible ending, finally closing the gap and answering the questions that everyone sought the answer too for so long since Kingdom hearts 1 and 2.
Fenrir.Schutz said: » My faves would probably be (in no particular order): 1) Ys Book I & II 2) Neo-Nectaris 3) The UFO endings on the Silent Hill series (particularly for Silent Hill 3) :p 4) Assault Suits Valken 5) Project Justice 6) Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri 7) Mechcommander 8) Shining in the Darkness 9) Gunhed 10) Guardian Heroes They aren't incredible endings by today's standards--I am just easily entertained. :p Ending wise don't think they were incredible but this is a solid list of good games. Ys Book I and II, Nectaris aka Military Madness, Gunhed aka Blazing Lazers, and Guardian Heroes. Gunhed is one of the best shoot em up game I've ever played and Einhander being my second favorite. Only Shining Force series I didn't complete is Shining in the Darkness. Had to format my PC and lost my save file on emulator. Couldn't get myself to play the game again. I've played many games but only 2 games I remember the ending being very good was Lufia II and Dragon Quest VIII. I'm most likely forgetting a few games but can't remember. I used to love the Sonic the hedgehog 2 ending <.<
I thought the ending to Bastion was just beautiful, and very dramatic with the choices it gave you.
It's probably because it was my first rpg more than anything so it was accompanied by a huge sense of achevement for me. Before that I'd mostly only played arcade style games so the game was huge compaired to what I was used to... I bet if I replayed it now I wouldn't find it as good of an ending but it still has the same kind of grip on my heart that FF7 does for many people XD
Secret of Mana had a pretty powerful ending.
Everything else I want to list is really just me listing favorite games, but Secret of Mana is the only one with an ending that really stands out as emotionally powerful in my mind. It's simple, but it was very effective. My main gripe with Valkyrie Profile's true ending is there is literally no way you'd know how to access it without a having a heads up and the B ending is like a virtual <^> to your efforts.

For such a simple formula, everything about it is so well done. Agree 100%. Red Dead Redemption and MGS3 are the first ones that stand out.
Both haunting as hell and still stick with me to this day. Anyone that doesn't consider video games to be art should play or watch the ending sections to both of those games Ramuh.Rowland said: » Shiva.Gib said: » Red Dead Redemption and MGS3 are the first ones that stand out. Fenrir.Demomo said: » Original Zone of the Enders ending still gets me every time :( second one had a much better story line and ending imo... and a main character that actually had a *shock* story line arch! If you ran through it without doing ranks, yes. If you did the ranks properly, you got a rather tear jerking ending.
Wings of the Goddess. This ending is just so beautiful.
I'm so tempted to start playing again JUST for the WotG story since everyone says its so good ; ;
People also say CoP is good...

Or maybe I just like when games/movies/anything has that initial "what the ***?" concept, but it ends up being executed really well and exceeds expectations all around the board (i.e. Ecco). Armored Core 3 ending was actually rather good IMO.
I liked Final Fantasy Tactics as well. Cerberus.Tikal said: » 1. Xenogears 2. Chrono Trigger 3. Final Fantasy Tactics 4. Valkyrie Profile 5. Valkyrie Profile 2 Get the hell out of my head... Swap Chrono Trigger and Xenogears around though. Seriously! Strike two! :P Bismarck.Patrik said: » i could put plenty, but for #1, The 3rd Birthday couldn't make my face stop making a "O.o" look for hours... HUGE... huge!!.. PE fan, but I hated 3rd Birthday... I felt that it took a steaming dump on the first two games... and didn't even get a full game. I was deeply saddened. ;_; Carbuncle.Kerokun said: » Fenrir.Leoheart said: » Kingdom hearts would've been such a masterpiece, if it wasn't for them meddling disney characters. Not so much a problem, it more or less didn't fit with how in depth the story actually is. Then suddenly you get Donald duck and Goofy making dumb noises. Completely ruined it for me to be honest. 1) FF8
2) Shadow of the Collosus 3) Windwaker 4) Kingdom Hearts 5) FFXI CoP Kingdom hearts was awesome in the beginning because the main story involved looking through the other worlds trying to find Riku, and on its own, didnt involve much story. After that, kingdom hearts involved large amounts of story and lore of its own, and bearly anything for disney, yet youre still forced to do it. so for instance, kingdom hearts 2 and days:
story.. (stop and help out alladin) story... (stop and help jack sparrow) story.. (goddamnit i JUST want to play KH story!) |
