There are fishing topics that come up now and then but mainly are asking a question for a single answer. I know there are many fishers that visit these forums so this is an attempt to get people involved and have a little fun discussing one and only one thing, fishing!

The emotions of fishing.

I know Blue Gartr has a Fishing topic already, but I would like to see this community get involved a little bit and talk, since not everyone visits BG. I would love to have a topic just for fishers including veteran fishers, casual fishers, and even players just starting out and want to ask a few questions without being embarrassed about starting a whole topic for a simple answer they could not find.

I only ask that you keep any bot talk to a minimum, preferably none.[Moderator edit: No bot talk] I want this to be a place where we can discuss anything from GP items of the day to what lure/bait to use or what area is best. A quick mention of how you're doing on the lu shang/ebisu quest, how you're doing getting your fishing items from Grounds of Valor, that item you're saving your GP up for, or how much you wish you could hurt Zaldon for not finding anything in your fish for the 10,000th time. Your lucky moment streaks and the moments when you have nothing come your way and question why you started fishing in the first place. Anything that comes to mind, think of it as the random thoughts thread for fishing.

I will list a few resources that I find to be useful when it comes to fishing:

I miss my sandfish monopoly. 40k per stack was some sweet money back when I wasn't even level 75.

Over my years of playing FFXI, I always considered level'ing fishing to compliment my 100+3 cooking.

While I quite enjoy fishing, I would always set out to go fish and skill-up. After about one hour of fishing, and not a single skill-up, I would become de-motivated.

I've recently returned from a two year break, and have managed to gain level 28 fishing (from 27.9) in two weeks. Finally opening up the fishing GP path.

So I guess my question to you veteran fisherpeople would be, is there any knack to getting skill-ups? Or is it really a patience game?

I understand that New Moon / Full Moon is better for bite rate, though I've never seemed to have a problem with bite rate.

Happy fishing.

Aim for fish considerably higher than you. It should not have taken you 2 weeks to get .1 at all.

Do your GP daily and start aiming for... cone calamary should do wonderful, as I recall. Don't bother trying to cap though, when you get to the 45~ range start hauling yourself to Talacca cove.

Generally, it's entirely profit the whole way through. What level are you?

Fish for profit, skill-ups are just a bonus on the side. It takes a special kind of crazy to be a fisherman.

That's really going to be your primary source of profit until you can start doing Hakuryu, Lik, and Gugru.

Thank you. I had been following various guides that did not mention that.

Edit: What should I target in Talacca cove? Mercanbaligi?

Use a shrimp Lure in Talacca cove for Dils (Black Sole), Mercanbaligi (Breams), Athapot (Grimmonites) and Istakoz (Gold Lobster).
Istakoz will cap out at 46ish, and Athapots don't sell as well as Grims so NPC those and try to target the others for max skill potential as well as ingredients for sushi.

I did Shall Shells on the dunes beach until 55, then Nashmau for mercanbaligi/ahtapot. When ahtapot cap you can switch to a sinking minnow for pterygotus. Stay in Nashmau until at least 92. If you're fishing to cap everyday you should average about 4.0-6.0 in skillups/day until the 70's.

-Oh and for most fish, skillups tend to be better @ new moon, bite rate better @ full moon.

Fun fact:

Non-taru, male characters get a patch of the guild insignia on the right side of their chest on the fishing apron:

Taru and female characters don't:

I imagine this is likely the same with all guilds' aprons, but I first noticed it on the fishing aprons.

I use my refresh hairpin when I fish so that my MP stays full after teleporting around and stuff. Not very stylish, I know ; ; (but I did get a torque last week so hopefully that makes up for it)
