Random Thoughts.....What Are You Thinking?

I imagine the fact that this is also a Japanese poll affects the positioning as well. I'm pretty sure Mattelot is moderating a English-speaking forum, so what North America may like will certainly be different from what JP would like.

Just consider the fact that DQ5 rated higher than FF7 on that list. If this was a poll using North American users, I'm pretty certain not a single Dragon Quest would even remotely be able to touch any Final Fantasy game. Just DQ is significantly more popular in Japan versus North America, as shown by the fact the DQ MMO outclassed both FF MMOs.

The fact Suikoden is rated at #65 and Suikoden 2 is rated at #19 makes my heart smile though.

That's the first time I've ever seen anything claim any of the series were better than HGSS. Even in the Pokemon sub, younger generations love the older games more. The newer games get the most hate.


Perhaps but I've also highly questioned the authenticity of lists like this, even ones that claim they were polled. Even if accurate, 50k vs 3.7M people is a large margin.

Don't forget that those 3.7M people you are moderating are specifically talking about Pokemon and only Pokemon where these 50K people are talking about all games across all genres - so there will definitely be some differing opinions there versus those who are shoulder deep in Pokemon and only Pokemon.

I get it. Asking 50k random gamers what Pokemon game they like the most, many answers you'll get are not because they actually like it (many are probably not even Pokemon fans) but which one they just saw a commercial for. Asking 3.7M Pokemon fans which is the best will absolutely give the most accurate answer, which is why I take lists like that with the biggest grain of salt.

The original point I was making was that someone was like "BotW wtf?" when it's won an unreal amount of awards and rightfully so.

To put concisely, what one demograph believes is correct doesn't necessary reflect what other individuals and/or demographs may perceive as correct either.

At the end of the day, every poll like this is subjective and opinionated.

That's the point of a poll.

It's to see what the personal views are of those you're asking. However, asking the wrong groups can give some results that paint an incorrect picture.

When polling a bunch of random *** gamers, best thing to do is vote on what series you like "Final Fantasy, Pokemon, DQ, etc" rather than pick specific games because that's what puts it into question.

While you are absolutely right there's a lot of people still grouping (thankfully) it would be quite dumb to deny the fact that less and less people try to group every day passing by.

It might not affect me, or you, but it does affect the game community as a whole and it can't be healthy in the long run, we all know this but honestly I don't have a solution for that.

With a larger community, pick-up parties would be more common. The solution therefore would be to get more people to play.

The ability to search for keywords in SeaComms would be really interesting as well. I wonder if that could be possible with the game's existing framework.

Going through this list in a bit more detail now, I'm impressed at the representation of games listed. There are several entries for most generations of consoles on the list. Kinda gives a nice glimpse of games that people felt left a mark on them as they grew up through the gaming era. I feel the only generation that seems remiss may the PS3/360/Wii era.

Given the fact that this is a Japanese gamers list, I'm surprised to see things like Dead by Daylight and Apex Legends on the list. A friend of mine did point out to me that DbD is apparently very popular in the Vtuber scene, which may have given it a spike in popularity.

Random personal note's of interest:

• It amuses me that P5 rated higher than P5:R.
  

• Final Fantasy X being rated higher than every single SNES one slightly surprises me, but not too much
  

• I'm surprised there is no Smash Bro's Melee, but I feel that scene lives on strong in the Western scene to the competitive nature of the game
  

• There is a LOT of Dragon Quest representation - DQ is a very beloved series in Japan after all
  

• I'd be curious to understand the rationale of putting the OG Mario Kart so much higher than all the other Mario Karts
  

• Tales of the Abyss being the only Tales game on the list. I never played it and most Tales game, but I would have thought Symphonia was considered one of the best of the franchise
  

• Legend of Mana being the only Mana game on the list makes me ;-; I definitely think Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 were better games

Yeah, without knowing how the polls work, it's hard to judge this without some doubt in the mind. With that being said, it's still a nice looking glass into the minds of Japanese gamers - just take it with a nice touch of salt.

And yes, Dragon Quest is a beloved franchise and it deserves all the love it gets! I just imagine though, if a list of top 100 RPGs was to be surveyed in the West, Dragon Quest may see minimal to no representation at all ;-;

The comment about FES/P3P though definitely strikes true to me as well, now that you bring it up. It does make you wonder.

And the Sonic comment makes me wonder if Sonic is just more beloved in the West than in Japan.

I wish I could comment more about the Yakuza series but I haven't played ANY of them, lol. I do hear they are great and memetastic at the same time though.

That intro is the only thing that holds up about that show. Ron Wasserman is a legend.

I really wanted Don't Look Up to be so much better than it's being. I'm sure it's going to get better but I don't have to willpower to get through 2 and a half hours of this ***if it doesn't start getting good really damn fast.
