Whenever a new Final Fantasy comes out, that game's protagonist is top voted, no matter the quality of the character or the game they represent.
I imagine the fact that this is also a Japanese poll affects the positioning as well. I'm pretty sure Mattelot is moderating a English-speaking forum, so what North America may like will certainly be different from what JP would like.

To put concisely, what one demograph believes is correct doesn't necessary reflect what other individuals and/or demographs may perceive as correct either.

That's the point of a poll.
It's to see what the personal views are of those you're asking. However, asking the wrong groups can give some results that paint an incorrect picture.
When polling a bunch of random *** gamers, best thing to do is vote on what series you like "Final Fantasy, Pokemon, DQ, etc" rather than pick specific games because that's what puts it into question.
I think ffxi feels dead AF. Weeks of silence and people act like it's a hassle to talk to anyone, noone teams up, people log in for 30 mins a day then log off. (I don't blame them.) INB4 someone tells me to play another game. No, I like the game I just miss it feeling like its a multiplayer game and not a single player game, and multiboxing isnt the answer.

While you are absolutely right there's a lot of people still grouping (thankfully) it would be quite dumb to deny the fact that less and less people try to group every day passing by.
It might not affect me, or you, but it does affect the game community as a whole and it can't be healthy in the long run, we all know this but honestly I don't have a solution for that.

With a larger community, pick-up parties would be more common. The solution therefore would be to get more people to play.
The ability to search for keywords in SeaComms would be really interesting as well. I wonder if that could be possible with the game's existing framework.
Going through this list in a bit more detail now, I'm impressed at the representation of games listed. There are several entries for most generations of consoles on the list. Kinda gives a nice glimpse of games that people felt left a mark on them as they grew up through the gaming era. I feel the only generation that seems remiss may the PS3/360/Wii era.
Given the fact that this is a Japanese gamers list, I'm surprised to see things like Dead by Daylight and Apex Legends on the list. A friend of mine did point out to me that DbD is apparently very popular in the Vtuber scene, which may have given it a spike in popularity.

Tales of the Abyss being the only Tales game on the list. I never played it and most Tales game, but I would have thought Symphonia was considered one of the best of the franchise

DQ deserves it! Great series. I did notice a few weird things about the list too.. like Persona 3 is on it but not FES or Portable? No Sonic or Yakuza games?
Edit: The survey might have been unintentionally rigged. It could have been multiple choice or choose from a list of pre approved games. I guess there is no way of really knowing since we don't have the actual survey to look at.
Yeah, without knowing how the polls work, it's hard to judge this without some doubt in the mind. With that being said, it's still a nice looking glass into the minds of Japanese gamers - just take it with a nice touch of salt.
And yes, Dragon Quest is a beloved franchise and it deserves all the love it gets! I just imagine though, if a list of top 100 RPGs was to be surveyed in the West, Dragon Quest may see minimal to no representation at all ;-;
