Beyond the Bandwagon: A Melee Summoner Guide |
| These heretic mages have unlocked the secrets of the forbidden magic of Vana'diel by creating a pact with the Avatar known as Carbuncle. Through his suggestion, these mages have the choice to delve further into the craft and create pacts with up to 12 more of the Avatars after defeating them in a battle to prove their worth. If accepted, Summoners are able to fight alongside them in order to bring peace to Vana'diel. |

A chain is only as strong as its weakest linkAre you tired of standing around pressing 1 button every 20 seconds? Looking to add a little more excitement and utility to the job perhaps? Well good, because we're about to break Summoner without even touching Astral Conduit. In fact, It's not even going to be mentioned in the guide at all beyond this point! :)
Okay ... maybe not break, but it's about to get fun so lets dive right into the action! I've provided a video to give you a quick taste of what this guide has to offer and what's possible when working together with your avatars. I hope you enjoy!
|
Teamwork is Key!By default, a Summoner is limited in how much damage they can do in most cases because almost all of our damage comes from Bloodpact: Rage, which has a minimum recast of 20 seconds. The difference in damage from a summoner only using bloodpacts vs a summoner closing a skillchain with a bloodpact is massive! In most cases it can easily double or even triple your avatar's damage output and that's not even including the additional damage from the player themselves. Working together with your avatar to create skillchains and magic bursts can be both fun and rewarding! Summoner is not nearly as helpless as it was in the past and has a decent selection of melee equipment now thanks to Ambuscade, Omen, and Dynamis [D].

Allows the user to perform a bloodpact with 0 recast in exchange for 50% more MP cost. Double skillchaining, double magic bursting, skillchaining into a magic burst, and using 2 avatars to skillchain together are all possible. Correctly using this ability can deal a massive amount of damage!
Examples:
• Double Skillchain
• Double Magic Burst
• Skillchain & Magic Burst
• Avatar Skillchain |
|
|
Shattersoul → Flaming Crush [Fragmentation] → Flaming Crush [Light]
Garland of Bliss → Shattersoul [Gravitation] → Geocrush [Magic Burst] → Geocrush [Magic Burst]
Shattersoul → Rush [Darkness] → Heavenly Strike [Magic Burst]
Volt Strike [stuns target] → Flaming Crush [Light]
|
|
!!
|
Shattersoul → Flaming Crush → Flaming Crush will generally be our strongest option with apogee.
This can be extended via Shattersoul → Garland of Bliss → Flaming Crush → Meteor Strike
• This will deal more damage at the cost of losing your aftermath
• Using Mana Cede before magic bursting will increase the damage of Meteor Strike
Shattersoul → Garland of Bliss → Flaming Crush is also our strongest option when apogee is not available.
• Flaming Crush receives 2 boosts this way. Garland of Bliss lowers defense and Shattersoul lowers magic defense.
• This can often result in 99,999 Light skillchains with proper gear and a good Flaming Crush!
When a target is magic resistant this is longer the case. Ramuh or Garuda usually becomes our best option.
• Garland of Bliss → Volt Strike / Predator Claws → Thunderstorm / Wind Blade (optional) |

Drains MP from your summoned spirit. The formula for MP recovery is (Summoning Magic Skill - 50) * Weather and Day bonus. The maximum bonus or penalty from Day and Weather is ±35% or 38% with Zodiac Ring with the exception of light and dark day.
|
!!
|
This ability transfers MP from your Elemental to yourself and thus the MP restored cannot exceed the elemental's current MP.
Elemental Siphon always receives the bonus effects from day and weather.
• Using Earth Elemental on Earthsday with dusty weather will cause a 10% bonus from day and a 10% from weather.
• Using Earth Elemental on Earthsday with windy weather will cause no bonus and cancel each other out.

How to obtain: Automatically received when unlocking Summoner.Carbuncle is the first avatar you receive once you unlock summoner. His damage output is not all that great but he more than makes up for it with a variety of supportive options. Carbuncle can heal, remove multiple status effects instantly, grant a protect and shell effect that stacks with regular protect and shell, and even remove a portion of a players enmity to control the target's focus. His regen favor is also a nice bonus! Carbuncle is basically a summoner's Yagrush.

Fenrir is the strongest magic burster in a summoner's arsenal thanks to Impact. Lunar Bay also has increased damage based on the moon phases that can occasionally make it pull ahead. Fenrir is capable of providing a large variety of support such as dispel, boosting acc and evasion, lowering a target's acc and evasion, enhancing attributes, and even providing magic evasion via favor to help resist magical damage. Unfortunately, the potency of these are also linked to the moon phase and can result in weaker buffs.

Avatars: Titan , Garuda , Ifrit , Shiva , Fenrir , Diabolos |
This will always be an important part of your job as a Summoner. We have a large variety of buffs that we can give our party ranging from offensive buffs such as Hastega II and Crystal Blessing, or defensive buffs such as Earthen Armor and Noctoshield. We also have powerful favor effects such as Ifrit's Double attack, Shiva's Magic Atk. Bonus, and Diabolos' Refresh that can be very helpful depending on different party setups.

Damage Dealer
Avatars: Varies |
Summoner is capable of dishing out a lot of damage when geared correctly. It's also very versatile in the types of damage it can do! Bloodpacts have a variety of damage types, mainly covering slashing and blunt, along with magic based bloodpacts for elemental damage. Unlike most damage dealers however, we can do as much damage as we want without fear of becoming the target's attention and we can stay out of range of dangerous attacks when needed. |
|
|
Hybrid DD
Avatars: IfritIfrit will generally be your go to avatar for pure damage output. If your target is not magic resistant then Ifrit will make you question why we even have more than 1 avatar at times... He is just that strong compared to everything else. There are plenty of NMs that have high magic defense though so it's good to have a variety of options!
Blunt / Stun Lock
Avatars: RamuhRamuh is an amazing avatar honestly. He has great physical damage and the ability to keep things permanently stunned for your party via Volt Strike and Shock Squall. This is often where I find myself in party setups even if Ifrit could be dealing more damage because it makes things easier for everyone.
Slashing
Avatars: GarudaGaruda is our go to avatar for slashing damage. Predator Claws is very strong and she can assist with healing the party when needed. If you need a little more healing support for your party or the target is resistant to blunt then Garuda is never a bad choice for damage.
Magic
Avatars: VariesOur magic damage will usually be reserved for magic burst setups in most cases. The main exception is cleaving with Ramuh's Thunderspark. Our avatar will vary based on the target's magic weakness so this is where we will see the most variety from our avatars. Fenrir is preferred for pure damage when possible or Shiva for her magic attack bonus favor.
Useful Bloodpacts: Physical
Mountain Buster, Spinning Dive, Predator Claws, Flaming Crush, Rush, Volt Strike, Eclipse Bite, Blindside
Useful Bloodpacts: Magical

Crowd Control / Debuffer
Avatars: Leviathan , Shiva , Ramuh , Diabolos , Cait Sith |
We have a lot of options to keep a large amount of targets under control. Shiva, Diabolos, and Cait Sith all have a form of AoE sleep that will handle most things. For targets that are immune to sleep we can still assist by lowering their attack with Tidal Roar, paralyzing with Thunderspark, reducing attack speed with Slowga, or stunning with Shock Squall.
Useful Bloodpacts:
Tidal Roar, Slowga, Sleepga, Thunderspark, Shock Squall, Nightmare, Mewing Lullaby |

Healer
Avatars: Carbuncle , Leviathan , Garuda |
Summoner can function as a solid healer. It's not going to be a white mage obviously, but we can come close and offer some unique things too. Buffing your party with Soothing Current allows you to heal them for higher amounts. Pair that with Carbuncle's regen favor, ability to remove up to 6 debuffs off of everyone instantly, and being able to remove 25% enmity to make tanking easier, then you have a really good alternative! Keep in mind that we lack Protect and Shell V though, unless you want to stand around forever waiting for Light Spirit to cast them on everyone...
Useful Bloodpacts:
Healing Ruby II, Soothing Ruby, Pacifying Ruby, Soothing Current, Whispering Wind |

Red MageA great subjob for all mages and Summoner is no exception. This will usually be your go to subjob for most things. Red Mage provides a lot of useful spells, job traits and convert is a nice tool to have around when MP is low.
• Convert, Cure IV, Protect III, Shell II, Stoneskin, Phalanx, Aquaveil, Flurry, barspells, Dia II, Bio II, Sneak, Invisible, Deodorize, Raise, Dispel, Gravity, Bind, Sleep
• Fast Cast II, Magic Atk. Bonus II, Magic Defense Bonus II, Resist Petrify II |
|
|
 |
|
White MageA more supportive alternative to Red Mage. White Mage offers options such as status removal and erase to assist the party. White Mage can be useful at times to easily access Reisenjima if your teleport rings are not ready. It's also one of the few subjobs that grants access to the Cataclysm weaponskill which can be useful for AoE Cleaving.
• Divine Seal, Cure IV, Protect III, Shell II, Stoneskin, Aquaveil, Flurry, barspells, -na spells, Erase, Dia II, Sneak, Invisible, Deodorize, Raise, Reraise, Repose, Teleport Spells
• Auto Regen I |
|
|
 |
|
ScholarAn interesting subjob that provides a lot of situational utility. It's weaker at curing since it only has access to Cure III but it makes up for this by boosting your magic skills to be able to reliably land spells such as sleep, aspir, and dispel. Weather spells can be useful for a number of things on summoner such as elemental siphon, Garland of Bliss, and to activate beckoner's Bracers. Accession and Manifestation also allow you to turn your single target cures/enfeebles into AoE spells. Finally, Parsimony can be used with an Occult Acumen set and Impact for large amounts of MP via Myrkr.
• Sublimation, Light Arts/Dark Arts, Penury/Parsimony, Accession/Manifestation, Cure III, Erase, Protect II, Shell II, Stoneskin, Aquaveil, Sneak, Invisible, Deodorize, Raise, Reraise, Dispel, Sleep, Drain, Aspir, Storm & Helix Spells
• Resist Silence II |
|
|
 |
|
SamuraiOne of my personal favorite subjobs becuase it takes 2 jobs that have nothing in common and meshes them together so well! Hasso grants 10% JA haste, accuracy, and STR which goes great with our hastega II. Seigan and Third Eye can be used as a defensive options to absorb attacks or resummon avatars when needed. Meditate, Sekkanoki, and the additional Store TP via job trait makes it incredibly easy to set up multi-step skillchains for your avatar to close/burst on.
• Hasso, Seigan, Third Eye, Meditate, Sekkanoki, Warding Circle
• Store TP II, Zanshin II, Demon Killer I, Resist Blind III |
|
|
 |
|
NinjaPurely defensive subjob that is mainly for Utsusemi. When paired with Volt Strike and Shock Squall you are near untouchable. However, You can also use the elemental nukes to reduce elemental resistance for your avatar's magic bursts and for magic bursting yourself. Be ready to carry around a lot of tools if you plan on doing all of that though.
• Utsusemi: Ichi/Ni, Katon: Ni, Suiton: Ni, Doton: Ni, Hyoton: Ni, Huton: Ni, Raiton: Ni, Tonko: Ni, Monomi: Ichi
• Dual Wield III, Subtle Blow III, Max HP Boost II, Resist Bind II |

Nirvana
Mythic Weapon |
Summoner's Mythic weapon is second to none for everything except magical damage. Nirvana offers a lot of useful perks that makes it an incredibly well rounded weapon. -8 perpetuation cost on avatars makes it very easy to build a melee set without losing mp and Accuracy+30 is a nice bonus. Blood Pact damage+40 and an extra 2 levels are massive for physical bloodpacts on top of a lv.3 aftermath that gives them occ. attack twice or thrice, which can also proc on bloodpacts. Nirvana has a hidden effect of +30% damage for Garland of Bliss which was already our best damaging weaponskill by a long shot! |
|
|

• Favors light avatars since they are stronger physically and skillchain well with Garland of Bliss.
• Favors skillchains since it takes full advantage of the aftermath. |

 |
|
Claustrum
Relic Weapon |
Claustrum seems kinda mediocre at first because most people look at it and see no useful stats for your avatar so they dismiss it entirely. However, Gate of Tartarus gives us the final tool we need to be able to make gravitation, distortion, fusion, and fragmentation skillchains, which lets us multi-step light/darkness for a higher multiplier on our closing bloodpacts. Being able to make darkness allows Fenrir to shine by magic bursting Impact for larger amounts of damage compared to just a gravitation skillchain. Claustrum has +60 accuracy on it which makes it our highest accuracy weapon. It also has a refresh+15 and damage taken-20% aftermath and occasionally dispels targets just by attacking them! |
|
|

|
|
• Favors dark avatars, mainly Fenrir and Diabolos, but can be used to 3 step Light/Darkness.
• Favors magic burst and compliments Nirvana by adding a magical option covering all elements.
• You should be swapping weapons for bloodpact: Rage so you will lose aftermath/tp often unfortunately. |

|
Khatvanga & Hvergelmir
Aeonic & Empyrean Weapons |
Long story short... Khatvanga takes too much effort to make ultimate skillchains and the end result is not worth all the effort. Summoner lacks a distortion weaponskill without Claustrum which forces you to use lv.3 aftermath and/or Rush/Spinning dive to make Umbra. Summoner also lacks a light property weaponskill so we can't make Radiance at all. There is still an incredible use for Khatvanga though. With a proper Occult Acumen set and Twilight Cloak we can use it to instantly gain tp to Myrkr for free mp! This is also where Hvergelmir helps since Twilight cloak has to be used for Impact we lose a large amount of fast cast. |

Grioavolr
Reisenjima Weapon |
Grioavolr is our best weapon for magical bloodpacts and it's not that difficult to get either. It can be augmented by Oseem with various augments. The important ones are bloodpact damage and magic atk. bonus and the cap varies depending on the stone you decide to use for augments.

Useful Sets and Augments
• If you are only interested in gearsets then feel free to skip this section!Useful gear will be listed here with information about various things such as what content it comes from, what the set is useful for, and augment options if they are available. This section is not discussing gearsets yet and it's main focus is to provide insight on the multiple different gear to choose from and why they are chosen later in the sets.
|
Indicates that augments are available for this set. Not every augment option possible may be listed but every important one for Summoner will definitely be there! All the augment options and extra information can be found in the BG links provided. |
|
Merlinic Attire
Content: Reisenjima |
     |
The merlinic attire comes from Reisenjima and it's rather easy to get for how strong and versatile it is. This set can cover a lot of options for Summoner such as fast cast, - damage taken, physical and magical bloodpacts, Garland of Bliss, idle set with refresh dark matter augments, and a drain and aspir set for when you /SCH. Just to name a few...
The downside to this set is that you have to deal with a random augment system. Merlinic can be best in slot for a lot of things but you basically have to win the lottery every time you augment it.

Helios Attire
Content: Alluvion Skirmish |
     |
The Helios Attire can be obtained from Alluvion Skirmish. When it was new it could serve a few different roles. However, after merlinic gear was added it became better at everything for the most part. Some of the Helios gear still has a place in physical bloodpact sets though. Physical bloodpacts transfer fTP across hits which makes double attack incredibly powerful!

Telchine Attire
Content: Alluvion Skirmish |
     |
The Telchine Attire can be obtained from Alluvion Skirmish. This set is mainly for utility since it can increase the duration of enhancing spells by 50% and most of the set is best in slot for elemental siphon. Telchine also makes a nice -dt set for your avatars since you can put both damage taken -4% and regen+3 for your pet!

Inyanga Attire +2
Content: Ambuscade |
     |
The Inyanga Attire is the first obtainable set from Ambuscade. It is unrivaled as a -MDT set and offers multiple useful side effects. For example, the body is best in slot for Fast Cast and the hands are best in slot for pretty much all magic other than summoning magic. This makes them very good for enhancing spells like phalanx or landing enfeebling spells as /RDM. The whole set also adds a very high amount of magic accuracy.

Tali'ah Attire +2
Content: Ambuscade |
     |
The Tali'ah Attire is the second obtainable set from Ambuscade. It is Summoner's best overall melee set thanks to the high amount of DEX, accuracy, higher than average haste %, and the additional DEX from the set bonus effect. With 27% haste overall on the entire set it adds gear flexibility and frees up the use of other waist slots options such as Windbuffet Belt +1.

Campestres's Cape
Content: Ambuscade |
Your ambuscade cape will be best in slot for nearly everything that does not rely on magic skill (Elemental Siphon for example). You can augment it with various stats and cover a large variety of options. The only limitation this cape has is your inventory space since you can make as many as you want! (Limited to making 1 cape per month however)

Apogee Attire +1
Content: Escha: Ru'Aun |
     |
The Apogee Attire is a set that is purely focused on boosting bloodpact damage. Unfortunately, each item lowers your hp by a large amount... But this also has a unique use in Omen as a hp down set for completing the "heal hp 10 times" objective. Apogee Dalmatica +1 is the only body available to Summoner with 4/tic refresh on it. This set will often be using only 2 or 3 of the slots max due to other important pieces taking priority such as Enticer's Pants for Magical pacts and Convoker's Doublet +3 for physical. There is not really a reason to make the hands either since Merlinic Dastanas are stronger and easier to acquire.

Amalric Attire +1
Content: Escha: Ru'Aun |
     |
The Amalric Attire is incredibly potent for anything magical based such as Garland of Bliss and Cataclysm and it's also our best nuking set when /SCH. The head can be skipped for magic damage since Merlinic Hood easily beats it, but it still serves a purpose when /RDM for refresh potency +2.

Convoker's Attire +3
Content: Omen |
     |
The Convoker's Attire is obtained from Omen and provides the highest magic accuracy overall for avatars. This makes the entire set best in slot for bloodpact: ward debuffs such as shock squall and sleepga. The set also provides a solid amount of accuracy for both master and pet along with useful effects such as refresh+3 on the head and perpetuation cost -6 on the feet (caps - perp cost with nirvana).
