response to a college app question: Quote: 1) Please share an experience when a facet of diversity has challenged and, perhaps, changed you. You might consider, but are not limited by, traditional categories of diversity: race, class, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, culture, religious faith, political views, or physical differences. I realized I was a homosexual at a very young age. However, when informed by the other kids in elementary school that this was not readily accepted, I quickly convinced myself I was straight. This lasted until around puberty when my attraction toward the same sex peaked. It was difficult due to religious beliefs and implications of non-acceptance by family members, but with time I came to accept it. Around the same time, I started to realize that I did not actually believe in the Catholic values that I was raised with. I began to accept myself for who I was and move on. I came out to most of my friends during the first of high school. After another year, being very comfortable with myself, I decided that it was time to tell my parents. Because I live with my mother, I decided to tell her first. When abreast of my sexual orientation, she began throwing tantrums. She claimed that because I am a homosexual, I would become feminine later in life, among other things. Above all, she claimed that she and I would both be sent to Hell. I could not stand to listen to her ignorance and informed her otherwise to no avail. Her religious beliefs and social stereotypes trumped any logic I was able to put forth. Furthermore, she went as far as to bring an “Island Medicine Woman” into our home in order to “spiritually clean.” So I simply told her that I was not a homosexual, and left her to her bliss. She is now in a state of denial, and refuses to accept the truth. Through all this, I have had the continuous and unyielding support of friends. This experience has taught me that “family” is only a concept. You are not obligated to “love” someone simply because of a blood relationship. If someone cannot accept you for who you are, no matter their status of connection to you, they should not be dealt with. The only connections needed to be kept, are with those who accept you and provide you with emotional support. The experience has changed me for the better, as I am now able to recognize true connections between myself and others, and decide which are worth keeping, without being clouded by blood relations. However, this only stems from my own conclusions, based on my own experiences, and I recognize and encourage the strength of others’ family connections. Sylph.Anuu said: my mother is useful for something :D response to a college app question: Although it is none of my business, you'd be a fool to not try to clear up things with your mother. Also, that is a very short answer. . . ._______.; This movie is AMAZING! <3 Pandemonium.Scrumpet said: This movie is AMAZING! <3 Fenrir.Snick said: So my bf and I have been having a fight over the last two days cause he bought 2% milk and I prefer 1% milk. What is everyone's preference so I can prove him wrong? D: Aside from health, in which case 1% is better for you, its the taste really. To me, 2% is doable as opposed to 1% which tastes bland to me but that is only if you drink it as opposed to eating cereal with it or as an ingredient to a recipie. Don't feel too bad about arguments such as this. Shoot, Foulei and I fought over microwaving food one time because he doesn't want cooked food reheated in a microwave yet he will eat precooked foods such as beefaroni from use of a microwave. I cook over the stove most of the time anyway. Would it be uncool if I ask for fashion advice here? lol
