YouTube Video Placeholder Colleague of mine's newest album, "The Arching Path", was nominated for a Grammy in the "Best Classical Compendium" category. Take a 15 minute journey with the title track from the album, performed by Timo Andres. I find the 2nd movement, "Sul Basento" to be mind-bogglingly beautiful- 7'30" in, but you really need to get there to really have it hit. YouTube Video Placeholder I have no idea what this song is, but every time I hear it I get chills. The buildup in the intro is fantastic. YouTube Video Placeholder Offline

YouTube Video Placeholder Eriks Esenvalds "Only in Sleep" performed by the Trinity Choir. Been on a big choral music kick lately- because even though 2/3'rds of my life has been spent in music, I sing for crap and have stuck to instrumental performance. I did have to study a great deal of choral writing, and there is a purity in the performance of a capella choral works unmatched in the instrumental world, or even in other vocal performances. This particular kind of soprano is a very lost art- a more Nordic focus to her tone and pronunciation without a wide vibrato commonly seen in a more Italian school that dominates solo voice coaching. YouTube Video Placeholder Quite possibly my favorite living Composer, John Adams. I fell in love with his "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" as a young kid, then met his "Nixon in China" opera that has truly stood the test of time. But this work- good lord it's fun, and a lovely play off how in pop culture, the Devil gets all the good music! And if you're anywhere near the Music Today Festival for New Music with the Colorado Symphony next month, you can hear this performed live with Maestro Adams on the podium! |
