Hi all, so I like to play solo + trusts a lot and often with an IRL friend. Was just looking for a pure DD job to add to my collection to make our duo more adaptable since I have a well geared RDM and DNC already. RDM's carried me through so much, but sometimes I wanna zerg stuff before it kills me/us.

I've built WAR and SAM together, and as a fun test I went into Kalunga V0 solo to try and see how much I could zerg it, and I was able to get to 40% before I died (couldn't self-SC), the WAR buffs were amazing and I can see why it's known for zergs.

I tried SAM and I was able to get past the fetters, but I barely took it beyond 60%, each of my fudo did like 1% damage, and this was with a Kaja Tachi (don't have pulse for upgrade though probably not worth it), most of the damage came from the SP2. I'm working on a Masa now, and mostly wondered how much of a jump it'd give on SAM's damage, since comparing my SAM to my WAR which has blurred shield +1 and Naegling is a bit unfair.

Also for some background info I missed out in terms of gear:
  • Both jobs have Empy+2 (a lot of it is for TPing), and decent DT.

  • Both jobs have JSE+1 necks with around R10, working on those. Also all ambu capes for TP/WSing.

  • Both jobs have Good DT for TPing.

  • Both jobs are ML10.

  • Got Nyame R20 for SBing and Fudo (though Fudo uses some Mpaca R15 too, head for example). Minus some pieces I'm still working on, I'm mostly following the BGWiki gearsets.

  • I don't have an Utu grip yet, and no +3 JSE with WSD so wholly relying on Nyame atm, but working on those. I have I think all macro pieces for buffs for both jobs.

Just trying to plan my gearing route out with your help and experience from deciding my next job. Thanks!

(Also I'm aware WAR mostly spams SB and SAM shines from SCing, but I guess in this specific case I'd like to get an idea of how a SB spamming Naegling WAR compares to a Fudo spamming Masa R15 SAM. SAM outshines WAR already in fights where I SC a lot but some fights don't work well with that such as Kalunga where you DO need the SCing for fetters, but you don't do much SC damage).

The thing with SAM, especially in Ody, is their lack of native source of attack increase, like Berserk or Last Resort. Without it, or the ability to reliably land defense down from Ageha really kneecaps them offensively. Ody in particular is just really tough for SAM due to losing out on a subjob.

I would say when you R15 Masa is when you really see it pull away in terms of damage over non-rema alternatives. Though even R0 is an improvement over something like Ambu GKT.

That being said, Doji (Aeonic) goes a long way if you want an affordable / free option.

With SAM roll and under attack cap -
Masa R15 is ~13% increase over R0

Masa R0 is ~9% over Ambu GKT

Masa R15 is ~7% over Doji R15

Doji R0 is ~5% over Masa R0

Umaru with a high +damage roll (plus whatever other stuff you want on it, including STR, Attack, or potentially WS Damage / Skillchain Damage) is also an excellent budget great katana and it definitely outperforms the Ambuscade line great katanas.
