I picked up the Oblivion Remaster.

So far...

It's ok. Character creator was a tad disappointing, because it's not as memey. They went with Type 1 and Type 2 instead of Male and Female, the only caveat there being that Type 1 is now Female.

Instead of color slider for hair, they let you just choose any color of the rainbow. What was once a joke you could do with a slider is now just a static option.

They don't let you mess with the skin colors and shades quite as much, but you can be purple if you want too. I'm a blue-green orc this time around, since I can't be black/red in the way I want too.

Level ups don't depend on what you skill up and aren't controlled by your major skills anymore, thus freeing you to pick major skills in what you'd like to be extra good at immediately. You seem to get a static 12 attribute points to spend, but still may only raise 3 stats per level up. While this is less abusable, it also means you can't get +15 attribute per level like in the original.


Game itself looks good, though sometimes the lighting makes it feel like it got brought out of a 2008ish action movie where colors can become incredibly muted/brownish in certain lighting.

They actually made orcs look worse somehow, by giving them the Skyrim Orc nose, but kind of keeping the rest the same. The Gray Prince's mouth is so wide he looks like he's talking while standing in a wind tunnel.

Health now regenerates automatically outside of combat, reducing the importance of potions and Restoration magic.

We can still fight in the water like in the original, thank god.

Objects that you can take or move now get a white outline. The cursor seems to have some issues with touch detection though, and I think they kinda bungled the active hit boxes for melee.

They also seem to have reused all of the old voice over, but I'm not too far in and so am not 100% sure on if that carries across everything.

I'm on the fence about playing it since I never played the original. Every remake I've ever played deviated from the original so much or in ways which were significant and it ruined them.

Once people have played it, please let me know if it deviates enough to irk you.

They still let you screw with the shape of your face, but that's never been the cut of my jib.

In original Oblivion the shade of your skin itself had a slider and a lot more that influenced it, and you could make Orcs look really similar to Dremoras that way.

I had Orc in the original who was mostly blacker than deepest night, save for his nose/eyes and a couple other spots where the dark red really showed up. He really looked like he could pass for a Dremora.

Now your skin options are kinda memey, cause you can make your skin purple/pink/blue/puke green etc. But once out of the character creator the game adjusts them slightly.

Like if you pick orange in CC, then actually start the character, take their shirt off and BAM they're like the color of milk chocolate.

I like Critical Drinker, but he's also insanely pesimistic and acts as if movies should never have any suspension of dispbelief at times. I try not to watch his reviews of any movie I'm interested in until after I've watched it.

That said, he's spot on with most everything he says.

They always say this, then always change mechanisms which make it not the same game anymore! They already talked about skills being changed to skyrim way or whatever.

Probably won't pick Oblivion up any time soon, but it will last years with mods.

You know why they put the body type stuff in there? to distract from this ***. Now people are complaining about that nothingburger, rather than the outrageous price for a remaster.

I was curious what the price was in real money, and was surprised to see it was $49.99 and $59.99 which means you are being shafted 33% cuz we dont like tea.

What do you mean? The assets are all remade from scratch it says, I assume the voice clips are all new or redone too.
