I never played DQX, but if there are some games i would consider close to FFXI, it would be FFXII or Xenoblade 1.

The other day we were talking about FF8.
Now this video brings a very nice interpretation of the story. A more humanistic view of the cast, showing them more as failures than superhumans that can protect the world.
In the end, I think I would even place FF8 over FF7 in my ranking. Obviously below of FF11, FF12, FFT, my favorite 3.
