Are you using dgVoodoo or some other dx proxy? If not, no graphics card will help.

It'll play the game lol. Well enough(as intended). Never had issues running 4~8 accounts on a 730 until they created error 4006.

Unfortunately this game has never been very well optimized so there’s very little that you can do with hardware to perform better outside of meeting the minimums.

DgVoodo should/will help but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Some of us are rolling with absurd setups and still run into the same problems as most everyone else in this game.

Now if you’re looking to do an overall upgrade for more games than just FFXI, we can walk you through some good steps or at least point you in some good directions. FFXI will run on almost anything so it’s real up to what you want.

At 480p?

Maybe slightly better than 720, doesn't matter. It's a ps2 game intended to be 480/720
(16x10 @ 1440x900)

While, yes, the game was played at 480 on a CRT 20 years ago, I would argue the game is actually unplayable today at 480 unless you have a 480 CRT monitor. Even if you consider it "playable" it would not be a good experience.

How much did you pay for that GT740? If it was what I'm seeing online you should return it ASAP cause it is not worth these prices.

A 1050ti costs the same or less and offers hundreds of times the performance and efficiency (4-5 times in actuality but whos counting)

There are GTX1060 on ebay for less than $100 which would ***on either of these too but those require external power so it's more complicated.

Function over aesthetics

Price is valid, you could get better for less, potentially. You can find 10 series(1030/1050/1060) for $40 indeed. Or like a "new" (reboarded) rx580 for $60.

I suppose if you don't play the game for enjoyment (and well...), 480p is probably fine for your purposes.

Slapping every cosmetic upgrade you can on it instead of accepting it for what it is. Have to use enhanced graphics. Enhanced fps. Enhanced packet speed. Enhanced chatlog. Enhanced UI.

Like damn. Superficial much. If you need to overhaul literally everything about it...

Oh jesus don't pay 130 for a 740 or 100 for a 1030!

If you like something you want to make it better/prettier/easier to use. If you don't then you have 6 480p windows all on one screen all automated.

I don't even know where they found the stock of old as ***gpus from when the gpu shortage was here. They start re-manufacturing 1660s if I recall correctly.

Just because there is nothing else you play right now doesn't mean you can’t opt for the best card you can get for the same price you alrdy spent. Future you may either thank or curse you depending on what they want to do.

It really depends on how you play, if you want six tiny screens up with minimal graphics settings, then a crappy card will suffice. If you want to actually enjoy how the game can look, then you want something with a bit more juice, 1050 or 1060 and newer. Use dgVoodoo2 + Reshade + AshenbubsHD-Basic makes the game absolutely gorgeous.
