The issue in the FINAL FANTASY XI Config Graphics tab wherein leaving the Draw Distance option unchecked did not work as expected.

This was in the patch notes, this is mipmapping and he "fixed" it and made it garbage because when it wasn't working as intended it wasn't changed and worked fine.

You used to be able to set it from off to 1 to 6 to improve the feature and now it's either off or on and everything above 1 is considered off.

As such the windower mipmapping config is now borked cause if you set it above 1 it's off.

Is there any way to force this back to how it was so it can goto 6, assuming they don't want to change it?

example of the prob

Mipmapping and Drawdistance aren't the same thing. Drawdistance is how far away objects appear, mipmapping is a technique of reducing texture quality based on distance from viewer. It seems that mipmapping is being set to max somehow.

Dug into both versions of the config tool, for Ashita related reasons and also to see what all the new one offered. So far it just looks like they renamed some old options and not actually changed/added anything in terms of new features.

Some changes they did:

'Enable MIP Mapping' has become 'Draw Distance', however it does not work properly at face value. If they did not change the client at all with this value then it actually doesn't do what its labeled as and it also makes the game look worse when enabled. The new feature sets it to 0 when checked, and 1 when unchecked. Mip mapping on this game looks best when set to any value between 1 and 6, 6 being the ideal. So when you actually check this, you are turning off mip mapping making it look worse.

Doesn't change what mipmapping is, FFXI didn't invent it. Seems Windower's description is out of date then.

You seem to be confused about what Radial is saying. his post was showing why the SE devs saying they "fixed" draw distance actually means they broke mip mapping, by sharing a quote from atom0s stating that the config tool has mip mapping labeled incorrectly.

I am not sure what we can do to correct this yet but we will look into it.

I know they just named it something stupid, if you read the blurb they know what it is they just called it the wrong thing. prob translation thing

http://www.playonline.com/ff11/manual/index.html?loc=en#140103

regardless they broke it, for the past 21 years you could set it from 0 to 6 and now it's 0 or 1 and that sucks. Especially for modding zones

Check my post here: https://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/57264/may-2023-version-update-part-1/10/#3663789

I've released an addon for Ashita v3 and v4 to fix this change. Windower can make use of the info in my post to make their own as well.

Would it be possible to add a extra feature to this plugin as a toggle so that it only turns on during a zone transition and is off most of the rest of the time? So it turns on when you zone or warp etc and for a couple of seconds after appearing in the new zone and then turns off once established in a new zone. Level 1 mipmap = full time, level 2 mipmap = only during zone transitions.

All texture mipmaps for the entire zone are created when the zone is loaded (outside of a few multiload zones like sky), and after that it's done. However it makes mipmaps for players, monsters etc as you come across them and this can cause hitching as you run around. Would be cool to be able to have it on for zone textures where the shimmering is most noticeable and off after that where it is far less noticeable. You can still get shimmering on players and monsters but it's far less of a visual annoyance and is a performance hog (esp with mods).

Interesting idea, we will look into that. it would likely end up being it's own plugin some thing like `DynamicMipmapping`

Not sure if anyone would know this, but is anyone aware how files created as mipmaps are named when stored in ram?

if an image was called picture1 what would the numerous mipmaps be called?
