I'm re-writing this first post for extra clarity.

I'm trying to locate the exact files for macros/equip sets/map markers for the purpose of backing them up an sharing them with friends.

All the standard searches an running about discord servers hasn't turned up very reliable information, for some reason people don't wanna talk about this.

It would be nice to do something about the pol wallpapers while we're on this, as trying to download them from inside pol is met with a prompt reading *** (yes 3 star marks) which is followed by nothing at all.

I am NOT trying to mod any files, not trying to edit them from outside the game or w/e. Please stop going in this direction.

Not interested in "check the USER dir" replies.
Google/etc was 'not' my friend for this inquiry.

I'd like to get this done an saved for everyone to use. Thanks to those who actually help.. the trolls are not welcome here.

Serious biz only thread.

The only way I figured this out was to change a macro and then look at the folders to see which one changed. Also, my main character on each account, that folder is way bigger than mule folders.

I’ve never seen anyone else suggest a better way any time I’ve seen this come up here. (Because I would be interested in this as well.)

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Yeah I got alot of those replies too.. about checking what files changed an all that.

I wanna make this easier for everyone, there's gotta be something more reliable. Thanks though.

This may or may not help you but in-game macros with auto-translated text are quite unreadable in the folders/files when opened, if you hadn't noticed already. I can't remember the program that allowed you to view/edit macros offline, something like modelviewer.

Sorry if you feel this is adding more noise, as you probably already know about this and need the files for more esoteric reasons, but if this thread is for posterity it's worth mentioning that all of these things can be saved to the server as well.

This can be done at the character selection screen. Saving will capture your macros, equipsets, and map markers and save them onto the server. You can then go to a fresh install and load them back.

Just make sure you save onto the server, and not to one of the four local slots it provides because those just save with your local copy of PlayOnline which is basically useless.

Your welcome to add it, but that won't allow one to share the macros an map markers with friends for example.

Copying over partial files risks causing a file check-rebuild (per an experience some years ago) we gotta get this right to prevent issues.

People been treating this like the kinda question that "shouldn't be asked" well.. I dare to ask it.

Thanks in the meantime =)

POLUtils is probably what you're talking about. Used it a while ago to redo my macros because I'd hate to do it in game.

The idea was to just copy over my pre-existing macros an such to a friend, not trying to mod or edit them in other ways.

If others wanna do that, then thats up to them.
Just trying to move the right files, fairly straight plan.

i have tried a lot

you can verify yourself
example with inventory (is.dat) :
go in your mog house
manually order your items (weapons then armor then medecine...)
/logout
make a backup for is.dat
then delete is.dat
login
your inventory is now a mess (default order, a new is.dat has been generated)
/logout
restore is.dat
login again
-> your inventory is in order again

I can confirm that es0.dat is Equip Sets
(i don't have es.dat file)

if you delete is.dat and is_2.dat, restoring is.dat is sufficient to restore inventory order
so i don't know what is the purpose of is_2.dat

Thank you for confirming es.dat/es0.dat, that makes 2 people who said this was what that was for =)

I corrected es.dat to es0.dat thru es9.dat, it was prolly a bad copy/paste over that removed the number.

I never mentioned it but my main char dir has 550+ files.
Not sure if that helps.. taking pics of the contents would be quite long.. so I won't do that.

cmb0~9.dat store synthesis history
this setting is stored only in the client, not on the server

so maybe unknow files are used to store some preferences, like last atma set when you enter abyssea

is_2.dat could be temporaries items

C>Program Files(x86)>Playonline>SquareEnix>FINAL FANTASY XI>USER

Macros:
Start by changing one file, log out and see which folder is which character.

The files you are looking for are the mcr.dat files. I save my SMN macros and upload them to mules for this exact reason. When you save to another PC, it will put them in the exact macro book/order as whatever you saved them as. For example, my SMN macros are MCR130-141. That is book 18-19 I think, and the pages within those books. Hope this helps, good luck!

Maps/Markers: IDK.
