Corona Virus, How has it affected your area so far?
By Odinz 2020-03-21 07:54:21
Its demand. NY rent is expensive because there is less supply than demand.
It causes a cascading effect across an economic cluster.
Public servants need to get paid more to afford the rents. School teachers as well. Cab drivers, white collar etc.
Landlords need to charge more to afford living as well. Their taxes are higher, their kid's tuition more expensive, cost of transport more expensive etc etc.
They're not greedy. They're trying to survive as well. If they have millions in revenue, they have millions in bills.

The BEST and most conservative death rate is 2%. But in Italy it is way higher than that.
2% is probably correct on paper, but once hospitals run out of beds death rate climb up because people getting severe illness won't be getting treatment, then they die.
If death rate is 8% @40000 cases, it's gonna be a lot higher @100000.
If I'm gonna find someone to blame for the situation, it's not China/Chinese, but all the "it's just flu" "not a lot of cases" "why so serious" "face masks are useless" people, lol.
It's *** ridiculous that NA/EU does such a poor job against this virus compare with Asian countries. Japan banned employees from travelling and cancelled schools @100 cases a month ago when people complained about pax event cancellation, NA should have done the same. But nooo, they continued to party and travel like it's nothing and now we got hit HARD.

Solution: Live in Jersey and commute to NY, like millions of others do.
Earn a NYC salary and pay 400$ a month for a 3 bedroom.
Bank 2500-4500 USD a month.

They are mostly owned by foreigners in CHINA. They buy a ton of apartments and rent them out for profit. I don't care at all about them. If people can't work for 5 months you think the money for rent is going to magically appear in their bank accounts? You think forcing people into their homes on Sunday and having martial law with military and government in the streets to police people, is suddenly going to make money appear in peoples accounts to pay the Chinese landlords?

No solution when people can't work for 5 months, are you brain dead? It does not matter where you live, there are going to be some intense repercussions from this.

And that's part of the story.
The existing healthcare sector exist to serve everything else pre covid-19. And I said many times, in the US in particular, they were already underserved. 1 bed per 100,000 people if I'm not mistaken.
Finite amount of health workers, already stressed dealing with what would have been normal conditions, now have to deal with potentially HUNDREDs of millions of sick people.
All while the actual healthcare work force shrinks, due to they themselves getting sick.
In summary - there will be less able healthcare workers, stuff that was normal and routine to treat previously will now be life threatening, due to the shortage of healthcare workers and the amount of covid-19 cases stressing the system.
Downward spiral, self-canabalizing situation.
Terrible.

What do you think the 1,200 USD cheques are meant to address? or the bill that allows people to take paid sick leave? I'm not saying they are adequate solutions, but if you're talking specifics here, then there's no point.
The point was generic towards rent because you suggested, sorry no you asserted, that they all "profit" from rent.
I should have left it at that, because that statement alone is enough to explain how stupid you are.

All while simultaneously criticising China as a totalitarian dictatorship
I don't think China can be classified as dictatorship because Xi has very little control over a lot of things. CCP has a lot of control on people but the power isn't centralized on one strong leader.
The entire reason why this outbreak happened in China is because Xi has limited control on the situation when it began. I wouldn't be surprised if this virus came from Xi's political enemy in China.
China in Mao Zedong era or today's North Korea is dictatorship, but not today's China.

We need more laws protecting national assets honestly, it's disgusting we allow mass buying of housing like this from non nationals. Western nations are the suckers of the world, nowhere else are you allowed to do crap like this. It's the same in London.
I think they should of considered offering more money to people who live in places with a higher cost of living but it is what it is.
That's because you live in purely capitalistic societies, and are the champions of globalization.
I think most of you are actually communists at heart, but are just too uneducated to know what communism actually looks like, or have no inkling of an understanding of what capitalism is.

You see, you are actually a communist.
lol
stop, please just stop. You don't know how primitive you appear to most who have read just one book on the topic.
Go read some Marx material. start with communism for dummies. heck start with understanding basic trade.

The worst part about China isn't how bad THEY are, it's that western nations let them be like that and reward them with our business because they have such a large population.
It's long overdue we stopped playing around with China and forced them to change or stop doing any business with them at all, they are far worse than North Korea or Russia.
Because unemployed or under-productive people like you insist on having access to cheap goods and products, that you are not willing to make, because it would mean you get paid 1 pound a day. So you exported the production of these items to the chinese. Who are SO productive in comparison to you, that they amassed a huge amount of wealth. You then begged them to come and re-invest that wealth in your country, because you again were so unproductive and wanted to continue in perpetuity with your consumption.
You don't want Chinese owning your stuff? be more productive, stop buying their ***and make it yourself.
So, today was the first case of the virus being confirmed in my rural county.
This last week has been pretty insane to start. Most grocery stores have been emptied, toilet paper is non existent. Bars, hotels, and casinos have been shutdown as of yesterday, our town relies heavily on these sources of income. There are now rumors that our mine sites will soon be shutdown as well. I plan to withdraw a substantial amount of cash from the bank tomorrow morning, and hit every store I can get my hands on to get some groceries before the hoarding gets any worse.
I have heard of California being on total lockdown, as well of rumors of people even being imprisoned for attempting to leave the state.
Curious to hear how other parts of the country are getting along, surprised there isn't an official Corona-Virus thread here yet.
Crazy stuff.
