Controller + Alts.

Today i done something i said i never would, i made an alt...

Here's the thing, i play on a laptop which, when i'm home, i have connected to my TV via HDMI, so i have it set up as dual screen. When i logged my alt in, i had that on my laptop screen and my main character on the big screen. This is where it went a bit haywire, i play using a controller, when i have both screens split, i can control both characters at the same time, in perfect sync, from said controller. However, i don't want to do this, i want my alt to follow me around like a good little puppy. Does anyone know how i can change this? Yes, i can play on KB, but don't want to sit with the laptop.. in my lap.. when i'm home. Not sure if there is some setting i can change so it will only work with the current "Active" window or not. Failing that i will have to just have my alt on a 2nd laptop. Any (useful) advice would be awesome! Thanks.
