You can farm scales and hides, upgrade your own Unity items for no cost and have more than enough segs to cover any unlocks you need. You wouldn't have to cap your moogle mastery like I did, but since I had the advantage of starting as the content rolled out, it was well worth continuing. Chests cap at 250 so that screenshot wouldn't tell the full story of how much more lucrative A/B was than C.
Exactly what I did. The progression is there, and makes a lot of sense.
But everyone wants shortcuts, or can buy clears on the Asuras. Meh.
Farm, upgrade unity, upgrade trusts, clear V0 for R15, rp that.
That's the progression.
It costs 5/10 izzat for chest/coffer openings once fully upgraded. Well worth the grind to get there.

Why would anyone bother with stop gap gear vs v1 unlocks for odyssey.
V0/v1 carries are easy, if you don't suck.
Idk, despite my best efforts I can’t seem to 1-box Ngai kills at V1.
Why V1 Ngai?
edit*
I guess a better question would be, why Ngai and not another easier V1 NM? ...because that NM does not give Gleti's Knife?
You only need a V0 clear to unlock the gear.

Oh, you meant "why V1 and not V0", not the words in that post I responded to lol
I have no idea. I know it unlocks augments but you get a pittance of RP so I don't know why they do that, no.

If I understand correctly (don't know firsthand, if I plan to augment something I do a higher tier):
V1 clear lets you buy a few merc runs or leech a few friends RP runs to get to R15. So, if you have little prospect for winning higher tiers anytime soon, it makes more sense to clear a V1 and have that option than to do V0 and not. Seems pretty common for people to do RP with open slots and allow leeching, given the low bar of doing 5% damage. R15 aug is still a pretty substantial boost to stats for most pieces if you'd be using them anyway.

In the example, he's taking himself into V1 so he's already cleared V0 and has access to the gear. If he's already got all the other V0 clears then it probably makes more sense to kill something that isn't dangerous.
There's two separate things going on here though. The V0 clear unlocks access to gear at a cap of rank 15. In order to spend RP, you have to earn RP... which is why you need to clear the V1, but this only needs to be done once and any NM counts for this. I'm not saying it's easy to earn segs, but I feel like there may be people cooking more than they need to by clearing a bunch of V1 NMs when they can already RP their gear :O

Pretty much what Thorny described. I can only speak to Asura (merc culture) server, but with that in mind, there is no reasonable benefit to doing V0 over V1, since V1 also opens up augmenting option. The only people buying a V0 are those ignorant of the augmenting process entirely, and they might just be okay with base gear. Or those who have absolutely zero intention of ever augmenting the gear (RMT, bots etc). If you're buying RP (Bumba/Kalunga is incredibly popular due to a solo BST able to carry 5 and cash out, and the gear is very good), you basically pay once for the gear unlock + ability to augment, rather than buy V0 gear unlock, then a V1 to augment, then pay for RP/run.

I think the people who have limited phones/segs simply pick the NM they get the most bang for their buck and buy that. V1 unlocks augments (once needed only), but if someone only has say 9k segments, it would be dumb to kill a V1 Gogmagog just to have access to augment every item, but can only buy a Coiste Bodhar, when you can kill V1 Kalunga and buy like 7. I'm assuming the people who even bother buying a V1 to begin with have limited segs, which is what is guiding their decision. They might not know the difference between V0 and V1, and that they dont need a V1 clear for every boss, but I don't think it matters in terms of boss difficulty anyways; they still need the unlock, and from my experience, mercs charge same price for either. So it kind of doesn't matter to them either way.

You need at least one overall V1 clear in any tier to unlock augment for all tiers.
If possible, I always did V1 just to be sure they unlock augments, and have some RP to R1 at least.
A lot of newbs don't know they need at least one V1 clear and wonder why they can't augment anything even though they might have RP from failed attempts.
Not talking about mercing, that's an Asura thing. Just getting people clears for nothing.
Tl;Dr - V0 unlocks gear. V1 unlocks augments.

I was on Asura up until the pandemic when it became intolerable (unless you liked waiting an hour between Lilith runs), and I had a mule there for a while so I could still participate in an active economy. I understand what you're saying and I agree, but my initial response was to someone who is soloing so it isn't a merc/leech situation. Mostly a PSA to not spend segs you don't have to :D

The issue really is,
You should do V1, but no one is going to spend their segments to do a V1 with you. And they're not going to take you to win their v20/25 because you don't have R15.
Can't win.
All you can do is grind segments, master pup and overdrive a V1... if you have access to it, which you don't. So you have to grind segments for 6 months, and climb T1 and T2 to get access to it.
Oddyssey had such promise starting out, but if you missed the initial craze you're ***. Normally, they'd have been nerfed and gear crept past and you'd be on time for the next "do it now or be *** later" content. But that didn't happen.

As much as this is hilarious and still brings a smile to my face when I read it, Eiryl's totally correct with this quote:

If you weren't there for the Odyssey rush when it came out and groups were going literally daily, you're screwed as a newer player. Even on the most populated server, I rarely see shouts for V20/25s, and it takes hours to fill them with the rest of the group. I almost never see shouts for V5/10/15 that should be a daily thing. But it's not. If you have RP capped, you're not touching the fights again. If you are a friend helping out, for sure np. But if you see "KI1 <job> <job> <job>, KI2 <job > <job> or <job>", good luck. In OG delve, there were actual drops and points that made going back and getting clears worthwhile. There is little incentive for people who finished it when it came out to go back and do it again.
They should expand the list of things you can spend Segments and RP on. After a point, Segments are meaningless. If they gave Segments a new purpose (like voidwatch weakeners), and add an incentive to re-fights, it might greatly encourage older players to help newer players progress through them.
unrelated but kinda related: nq limbus sets could have easily been "gap gear", if they didn't require 2 matters per piece. They're always making everything so goddamn annoyingly complex that not a single new player is gonna go through the process of making nq Justice Set, when that could have easily been put in place for such a scenario. Instead of constantly having to release new gear that's easier to obtain than Odyssey sets.
example:
justice crown >> requires 1 shard (any) + 1 matter (either)
magnificet crown >> requires 3 shards (any) + 1 matter (either)
Duty Crown >> same as current
A new player could finish a whole set of justice (or any) limbus set within a few days, and it's pretty sturdy out the box, even at nq. But it's a true pain in the *** to bother with, so it's largely ignored.

The Limbus grind is terrible, no argument here.
Exception is youre an absolute haijin and manage to catch all 22 mannequins, and do most of the damage on waves 1/2, O/U and AAs. Then the grind is less terrible.

I'm not even talking about the grind. Just the gear to upgrade. From my understanding, you can straight upgrade nq sets as a fresh player, assuming you've opened a box at least once, right?

The whole thing hinges on what gear would that limbus player use.
Ambu+2 limbus climbs sounds disgusting
Ambu+2 odyssey is terrible
Af+3/Relic+3 isn't significantly better (defensively)
Malig takes months and doesn't cover heavy
Su3 aside from kenda is pretty bad
A null mask, ACP, adamantite armor are out of reach. Unity is mostly trash.
RSE+1 is Nyame-1 but it's now impossible to obtain.

I dont think anyone has a fresh char to test that theory. I wouldnt be surprised if SE vibe coded the gear augments in but the box still requires the first matter to be used on an accessory.

119 is weak by all standards, Ambuscade gear would be fine. You don't even require units to uncurse the new sets. You can literally open at least one box weekly just from codes, so climbing required.

Right. So
code > open a box > get furnace access (and potential matter)
buy nq limbus piece > get minimal upgrade mats (if it was lowered per quality) > new player gets a brand new piece of gear that took 10 minutes and a little gil

Assuming you can even get 5/5 NQ or 30m? for +1
NQ still basically impossible to buy, buy the mats and pay for craft... 20~30m? 5m ingots etc

NQs are on AH for sub-1m on most servers because they're in the handout list (gobbie box, prob flotsam and sp key and such as well)
they probably wouldn't do it that way since they did the upgrade path to retain your augments
then again, at this point they may as well take matters off ranks until 15, then people might actually do it. matters for only higher ranks would be a lot easier to stomach

I'm just saying. several updates to roll out gap gear, why not just make base limbus sets THE gap gear, and simplify making it. They're just the new abjurations of the game, just make them easier?
