But good try Nik.
Acceptable attempt.

Unless you have run a sucessful business you have no understanding of what anything costs to make.

Learning how to say "Would you like an apple pie with that?" didn't grant you any insight into the inner workings of a restaurant.

One example.
Typically an employee costs twice their salary to employ.

I'd also imagine there's a fair bit of loss in the whole producing more product than you sell.
Spoilage
This *** a doozy. Particularly because of ridiculous inaccuracy with reporting.

Rooks hasn't been running the website or handling the financials since Meshi ran a MD5 decryption on his account, changed his password and made himself a mod. Rooks = Meshi now.

Depends on how it's reported.

If it's reported at cost, that's not really inaccurate. That's actually GAAP.

I just get tired of seeing great restaurants rated down on Yelp for being too expensive.

I swear to Christ middle age middle-upper-class women are the most entitled *** people on the planet. There's a reason the "I'd like to speak with a manager" haircut is known the way it is!

I mean more along the lines of there's a lot of product in kitchens that just isn't reported as being wasted due to spoilage or overproduction or misshandling.

Not a huge issue for say, diners, but it's a *** in a buffet setting.

Eh. And I'm probably one of them just expressing mine here.

I guess I just have a very particular mindset having been both a poor customer service worker and now the other side of the equation.

How non-publicly traded companies do their books is their own prerogative.

Wrong information just feeds into more wrong information. It's impossible to dictate (or even enforce) GAAP to a bunch of businesses who sole aspect is survival.

I luckily never worked food service personally, but my mother did for many, many years.

She was very good at it and also did supervisory work in that setting, but it makes her hard to go out to eat with sometimes. My stepdad and I always have to nab the check so we can pay and tip, because she's so exacting and hypercritical of every little thing a server does that if we let her cover things they'll never get a respectable gratuity.

I find that odd. I find myself hyper-aware of all the stresses being a server has attached to it and very forgiving of mistakes. Especially ones that are outside of their control. Such as a cook *** up.

Maybe it's because I, as a cook, work so closely with them.

Also, did someone actually say kitchens are a safe work environment?

Soounds like my wife and mother in law. She was a financial controller for several franchises in the serving and gaming (casinos) industry . She's tenacious on bad service experiences.

Only when you compare high stress mixed with drugs, eccentric personalities, sharp knives and hot fires to something like combat infantry.

Oooh I missed that one.

Yeah. Kitchens are decidedly not safe. Burns and cuts are a daily occurrence.

Oddly enough, some days I almost miss working in a kitchen.
Almost.

Now who's strawmanning again?

Except you said:

Livable welfare is dangerous, because if you make it so you don't have to work to survive, then nobody works. Who is going to make your food/clothing/buildings then?

Which caries that implication pretty heavily.

When I go out to restaurants with dad we always leave comments on tripadvisor. And we do see often people who *** at things being expensive when instead they're really average for what they offer(I think some people just got no clue what to expect from a restaurant, or order wine and then get shocked when it's pricey).
That being said if a place is actually expensive it has to be noted for other potential costumers who read those guides for a reason. Many people desire cheap over fancy afterall.

We tax dividends as income, but we don't tax the increase in an investment's value unless its sold. Then we call it capital gains.

This is what I was talking about. Thank you, I didn't know the correct terminology.

As someone who "yelps" a lot, I find the price criticism only solid when the price doesn't match the meal which will happen a lot. I hate it when that is the only thing they rate though.

"1 star, food was too expensive!"

Great but how was the food?

There is a certain degree of "subjectiveness" (not a real word) when it comes down to this. While subjectivity (a real word) defines expensive v inexpensive for the individual. To get to the point; a 20-30$ plate of food might be considered expensive, especially when there are 2-4 people on the bill but it's not that expensive when compared to 60-80$ or more a plate. Then there is the ambiance factor... hmmm I might have abscond to the Sardine Factory in Monterey now.
