The only version I've heard is "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." But, I guess it is in that strange Italian language, so it could be up for interpretation. To me though, you switch up the words and it takes on a different meaning.

It means you people who enter here should abandon all of your hopes. So the first one you said is correct, there's really no ambiguity in italian. Translating it differently it's just outright wrong, doesn't matter how many books tell you otherwise.
