-Clock was beeping in class, despite needing an AC power source or backup battery and obviously needing to be configured to beep.
-Clock had conspicuous wire on the outside that didn't serve any function besides distinguishing it from an ordinary pencil case.
-Kid's dad is an activist, with personal reasons to want something like this to happen.

1. irrelevant
2. No.
3. lol
4. No, it didn't.
5. irrelevant as well 1. Relevant as it shows intent.
2. Are you saying that this was an original piece of work?
3. Is that irrelevant as well?
4. Are you also denying that?
5. Are you saying that parents have no influence over children?

Let this one die. Sure it wasn't a real bomb, but there are reasons why someone might have intentionally brought a fake bomb to school. Or this might have really been an honest mistake by a kid followed by extreme reactions by all the people around him. None of the people commenting here will ever know for sure, it's all just your opinions.

It was well on it's way to being dead, but someone had to bump it with hopes of a kid being a terrorist.

I've seen lots of people using this argument but at no point has anyone proved it or quoted their source. Until then it remains propaganda at best, vile hate mongering at worst.

You'd have an easier time convincing devout Catholics that Jesus never exists than convincing sone here that Americans aren't as racist/bigoted/homophobic as the media has led them to believe.

Anyone who has an opinion is an activist if you don't agree with their opinion.

Well this whole conversation is stupid. A bunch of people insisting that they somehow know for a fact that it's option A, then another bunch of people replying "your opinion is wrong, it's most surely option B." No one will ever convince anyone from the other side, and no one can ever know for sure at this point in time . Also, IF one day the truth actually does come to light, half the people here will have egg on their faces. So why continue?
Would be nice if this thread was locked and would go away from the FFXIAH homepage.

That's how a forum works, dear.

The forum mods haven't determined it requires locking, but it could certainly be demained at this point.

ps. Ni is fine, but one's mileage is going to vary on that, and it's not something that needs discussed in here in any case

Haven't been keeping tabs on the story since at first I thought it was stupid. Kid brought clock to school, gets arrested, click bait titles thinking it was something to do about race or whatever.
However after reading different articles and watching interviews and "analysis" videos of people's interpretation of the clock its all starting to be kinda weird.
Anyway you slice it, a clock inside a case is kinda suspicious or at the very least is odd. The kid claims to be an inventor and likes electronics. I have no problem with that and like schools/teachers who encourage this kind of behavior. I use to bring random ***to school and show to certain teachers because I thought they'd be interested in it. So I can see why a kid would bring something they made. Now using a clock you can get at a store, taking it apart and showing it off, eh it has it merits. Can learn about circuitry and stuff but its definitely not something the kid made.
I think we're not getting the full story of what took place with how the teachers and the police interacted with the kid that lead to his arrest.
As far as the kid's family goes...its possible they could be activists or something. Heard they went to the same mosque that had the protests at earlier this year. Also the kid's sister got suspended for bomb threats as well. So the whole thing is super sketchy.

Yet there's intentional misinformation being spread, so no.

I don't find it odd at all.

As far as anyone knows, he might have been dared to do this by a girl he finds cute, during a game of truth or dare.
A bunch of people scream "he made a pencil case clock, he's a genius who will cure cancer!"
And another bunch scream "Terrorist!"
But in reality, he's just an awkward nerd who was trying to get some action.
So that's what I'm running with, since I have just as much proof as anyone else here.
Source: The picture of him had the "I thought I was gonna get some action" expression on his face.

Doesn't have to be a genius. It's a 14 yo who is exploring engineering, he didn't invent a new teleportation device but still he made something the majority of his peer wouldn't even know where to begin with if they wanted to imitate it.
As for the thing being "suspicious"...well, that's just the usual paranoia of people. Wanting to see a hidden meaning behind everything, never trusting anyone, always assuming the worst intentions possible.
Until you can prove he had ill intentions, stop giving this kid ***.

I'd like to see the fine print on the offers that this kid is getting.
*Offer valid until the next news cycle brings us a different "victim" flavor of the month, everyone forgets about you, and/or we can no longer profit off of the good PR.

Anyone can take a bought clock apart and fit it into a box it's not that hard really. I've done that at school but mine actually looked like a clock since it was an analogue clock mounted into a wooden casing then painted. I'd say that was more complicated than what his kid has done.

So? You want an applause? The internet acknowledges your awesomeness, congratulations.
The story isn't about whether this kid is the smartest in the universe.

I frequently have computer components in the back seat of my car. Various server blades, PSU's, etc. I came out of a local coffee shop to find 2 police officers looking into my windows suspiciously. There wasn't a problem, I just walked up to my car, asked politely if I could have space to pull out, and left. However, I now put computer components in my trunk, because apparently anything with wires is suspicious.

It's hard to say that it was anything more than small-town cop curiosity.

Of course, but since we're being accused of being judgmental liberals we may as well act the part.

Used to have that crap in my old car from time to time. In my current car I've just had a 4u rack in the back for over a month, along with 2 bins filled with random cables).
Guess I should clean that ***out.
Quote: 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed arrested for bringing homemade clock to school
Police in Texas have arrested a 14-year-old boy for building a clock. Ahmed Mohamed, who lives in Irving and has a keen interest in robotics and engineering, put the device together on Sunday night. When he took it to school the next day, he was pulled out of class, interviewed by police officers, and taken in handcuffs to juvenile detention, after being told by teachers that his creation looked like a bomb.
Ahmed told The Dallas Morning News that he showed his clock — a simple device, created from a circuit board and a power supply wired to a digital display, all strapped inside a case with a tiger hologram on the front — to his engineering teacher first, who advised him not to show any other staff members at MacArthur High School. He originally kept it in his bag during English class, but his teacher heard it beep during the lesson — when Ahmed showed her his home-made clock at the end of class, she took it away from him. In sixth period, the school principal came for Ahmed with a police officer in tow, arresting him and marching him out of school. The schoolboy says he was interrogated by five officers, who asked why he was trying to make a bomb, and was threatened with expulsion by his Principal unless he made a written statement.
Ahmed may still be charged with making a "hoax bomb"
Irving police might still charge Ahmed with making a "hoax bomb." Police spokesperson James McLellan said Ahmed "kept maintaining it was a clock" when he was brought in for interrogation, but that he offered "no broader explanation." When asked by The Dallas Morning News what broader explanation Ahmed could have given for a clock that was actually a clock, McLellan said the creation "could reasonably be mistaken as a device if left in a bathroom or under a car." A police report released on Tuesday cites three MacArthur High teachers as complainants against Ahmed for the "hoax bomb."
Ahmed's father says his son was mistreated because of prejudice against Muslims
Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, Ahmed's father, says his child suffered because of prejudice against Muslims. "Because his name is Mohamed and because of September 11th," Mohamed told The Dallas Morning News, "I think my son got mistreated." The Council on American-Islamic Relations is already investigating Ahmed's case, with Alia Salem, the director of the council's North Texas chapter, saying that it seemed "pretty egregious."
Ahmed said he was a member of his middle school's robotics club, and had tried to find a similar group in his high school. Now the 14-year-old — born in the same year that the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon took place — says he'll no longer bring any of his inventions into school. A picture reportedly taken by Ahmed's sister shows him in handcuffs at the juvenile detention center, sporting a NASA T-shirt and an understandably confused expression. Ahmed was fingerprinted, before being allowed to return home, but is still serving a three-day suspension from school.
Many in the maker and tech community have already rallied around him. A hashtag — #IStandWithAhmed — rapidly rose to become one of Twitter's top trending topics, and support has come from a number of sources, including a JPL engineer who offered Ahmed the chance to see a Mars rover whenever he wants. Ahmed's father says his son "just wants to invent good things for mankind" — we can hope that the police reaction won't dissuade the talented young creator from making good on his dream.
