About the only thing we agree on here is that someone does need to be held accountable and some kind of action taken on that individual. (The teacher, but I wouldn't immediately call for his firing as I stated a few pages ago)

I think being invited to the White House and all the stuff that follows the visit will turn out to be its own reward for him without burdening the community, no matter how messed up they may or may not be.

Now let's just hope that more kids don't actually attempt a bomb hoax just to get a personal invite. That's a pretty juicy dangling carrot right there.

Hmm, so if Obama wants the kid to bring the clock to the White House from Texas, wouldn't he potentially have to get the thing through airport security? That could lead to a hilarious but unfortunate twist in the story.

"No, guys! It's not a bomb! It's just a clock that I was told to deliver personally to the President!"

It's multiple people that need to be held accountable, really the police. I find nothing wrong with the teacher's actions.

The community is a good bit responsible for this, so I wouldn't go as far as to say that they shouldn't be burdened.

Not the English teacher, the one that told him to hide it while carrying it around the school.

The only thing they will find on the scene will be a letter that reads "Thanks Obama".

I think I was more shocked that this happened in Irving, of all places. The mega suburbs between Dallas and Fort Worth that include Irving, Arlington, Grand Prairie, etc. have a very diverse population. Mosques and Buddhists temples are a common sight, despite what some here would think.

This raises many questions as to the age and level of immersion of the teacher who panicked. I doubt they'll release the name of the teacher.

My thoughts:

-A teacher can be ignorant enough to not spot the difference. She saw something "suspicious" and reported it. Fine. That's the reality of the world/country/state they live in. She panicked because of his ethno-religious identity. Again fine.

While I agree with most of what you posted, it really isn't "fine" that s/he, seemingly, has no awareness of the demographics within the community s/he teaches. His or her fear can be self-perpetuating with other students, which isn't acceptable.

This sort of thing makes me seriously wonder why anyone willingly lives in Texas if they don't conform to a very limited stereotype.

Because UT Arlington and UT Dallas were especially enticing to Middle Eastern people, Pakastanis and Indians who were studying engineering, math and science on student visas in the late 1970's and early 1980's. (Go back to war-torn Iran, amirite?) They obtained citizenship, settled and had families before the US became increasingly Islamophobic.

Crazy, right? How were they to anticipate the direction the world would take in thirty to forty years?

Reality doesn't jive well with the "Texas r stoopid!" sentiments here, so...

The Case that was carrying the Clock and not actually part of the clock is used often by engineering students to carry their tools/projects back and for to school and is being mis-represented as actually being part of the clock itself. The clock is a clock nothing else, and its ridiculous to try to paint it any other way.

I used to have something similar for my technical drawing class. One of our first projects in year 1 was to design and construct a basic one - from then on, I made a new one each year, each one being more funky-looking than the last.

By my last year at school, my folder looked like a batman accessory and probably could've stopped bullets.

Well, what can I say. I was the technical drawing student my school deserved, not the one it needed.

Speaking of, I wonder what Frank Miller's take on this situation is. Because I'm sure of a few things. 1) That he's got an opinion on this. 2) That it's probably completely insane. And 3) It's either the best or the worst possible response depending on which of his rather extreme ideologies he's feeling that day.

Clearly a failure of our brilliant educators and their "zero tolerance" policies.

Aside from that, I am unsure how the kid was not able to tell the cops it wasn't a bomb. I doubt there was a room full of cops and none of them took pause before arresting the kid. Smells pretty funny to me.

please remember, schools don't have the power of arrest, it took the judgement of the local police authorities to do something this stupid.

I just want to clarify that zero tolerance policies are not necessarily the fault of educators, at least in the US (I am unsure of the school systems in other countries). It is the prerogative of local boards of education to create and adopt policy. It is not lawful for a teacher who is currently employed in a district to sit on their own board of education. While retired educators may do so, it has always been my experience that these governing bodies are mostly comprised of people who have never taught.

Probably worth noting that he was arrested for a bomb threat, not for possessing a bomb.

He was held in the office, the school wasn't evacuated. The school officials clearly did not think it was a bomb, or they would have done those things. Maybe he made an off-color joke to someone about it, maybe the school officials are racist, who knows.. but he was charged for making a bomb threat and potentially was guilty of doing such.

Brilliantly put. I can't help but wonder how many people, even here, simply read the thread title "14 yo arrested for making clock", chimed in on how HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE that sounds, and walked away feeling immensely better about themselves.
