It wasn't until 2009 when I had finally finished my sets, sans d-ring.
I knew I had to do something as a career DRK. My first set I referred to as a "tank" set for leveling my first job. High defense where PDT wasn't available.
I hounded crafters, farmed materials, and camped the AH for my Darksteel and Coral +1 sets.

I don't miss the 75 era days at all. Waiting 1-2 years for a dalmatica is sad and it should never been like that. Game used to be extremely flawed and ridiculous.

Oh wow it agreed with me and didn't bash anything yet, history in the making.

I agree with you on some things but i like to spice things up. The 75 lvl era was the worst. 5 +years for a relic and other things, it's just so wrong. I remember when used to be a linkshell breaker. That's how bad ffxi was back @lvl 75. But it was hella fun to play when servers used to be packed. I had lots of fun doing abyssea and sky/sea.

The ffxi community used to be extremely acid at that time as well.

Remember the days when packed cities would lag? Don't get that anymore.

Ha, back in the 75 days, Anything sky related used to be a linkshell breaker.
Go to every every event, kill every mob, the dreaded "Dragon Kill Point" system that LS leaders rarely adhered by after implementing if someone else had more points than them...
I've had good and bad experiences in the 75 cap era, and some of them have made me salty as *** when regaling the old days.
And you *** out there know who you are.

Remember the days when packed cities would lag? Don't get that anymore. You will get less lag as soon they after December. Just give it 1 more year after that. Ffxi will be playable(if enough players) and lag free @ private servers full of bugs.

I actually remembering a player full on crying because he missed just 1 event which knocked him out of line for a Noble's Tunic. He's never missed a run and just that particular run he had to miss due to a family thing but rules are rules.
I remember buying my Noble's a few years ago while leveling up whm for like 50k or something

Quote: So you are telling me because you are unlucky at obtaining an item you are rewarded with a better feeling? So because you spent ten years killing the same monster over and over it's justified, despite the guy next to you going 1/1? By that logic because I went 1/1 on D ring that I am plagued with absolutely no satisfaction?
That's actually true. Dr. B. F. Skinner demonstrated this with a series of experiments that resulted in the creation of the infamous "Skinners Box".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operant_conditioning_chamber
If an action always has the same result / reward then the subject quickly becomes bored of that action. If that same action has a pseudo-random result / reward, the subject will frantically engage in that action and receive a greater amount of stimulation from it. The most random the reward rate, the greater the level of stimulation. This is what makes gambling so addictive.
What Kenrusai and others of his ilk are missing is the feeling of accomplishment by winning at a completely random reward. Getting that item from an HNM was, to them, like winning the lottery, pure euphoria at a set of random numbers resulting in their ticket being a winner, and not from any actual skill based event. A predictable skill based reward system simply does not produce the same levels of brain stimulation as a random reward system. So I guess my advice to them would be to never go near a casino or gambling hall.

They are porting the entire game to mobile so I doubt FFXI will be available only on private servers. It won't be the exact same game but it will still be FFXI. Also I doubt the servers will only be up for one year after DEC, considering they planned to keep it fully functional until March next year where they remove PS2/Xbox. Anything past that is up in the air.

Why do you think they are unplugging the servers in December? November is their last major content release, they will continue supporting the game as long as it's profitable to do so, which is going to be another two to three if nor four years. There will be minor updates done every few months.
This game is stupidly profitable for SE, by far the most profitable game they've ever had. It continues to provide them with extra cash to throw at failed projects left and right. Hell FFXIV was funded off the profit from FFXI, only to fail and have to be rebuilt, incurring tremendous development costs in doing so. The whole reason we're seeing SE focus operational funding elsewhere is that FFXI is in the long slow decline of a successful MMO. It's got years left and is still very profitable but it's market cap has long since been reached and would require immense levels of funding to be rebranded and attract new customers. So instead of investing more money, they invest into a different product while continuing Operational & Maintenance (O&M) on the current product.

I'm very curious and interested in what it'll look like.

I was really pessimistic at first, but somebody on the OF posted some info on it and it doesn't sound too bad given what other games have done graphically/gameplay. I still dislike having to use my phone to play it, but maybe it will be nice on a tablet or something.

It will be very similar but not a port. I don't like the fact that is being developed by Nexon...

Dear god, square enix was in fact pure geniuses. It's funny because I was just watching a video from GameSpot calling Destiny Farmville with guns. Using the very same method you mentioned they pretty much did what FFXI did but instead supplemented the game with smaller and more consistent updates. Thewe very smae 3 DLC packs that came out just in this last year raked then 140 USD per player. I think SE has them beat on this method wirh FFXI because the managed to dupe poor fools into doing this for almoat a decade with no real new content. It seems FFXIV is following the same suite since 2.0 but more of the destiny approach with smaller consistent content drops
This is a very common tactic with MMO's and other perpetual profit games. Ethically it's considered a very grey area because designers are purposely designing their product to be addictive and target that same random reward center in the brain. The most successful MMO, WoW, was able to effectively use this science while masking it such that the subject, I mean player, didn't know it was being done on them. It was, and is, nothing but constant grinding with the publisher making sure to invalidate previous rewards frequently. Updates were timed such that they arrived right after the bulk of their paying customers had acquired the rewards from the previous content update and thus they kept their subjects in a constant state of reward seeking behavior.

i flipped my ***when i got byakkos and shura haidate the same day.
You couldn't find anyone else to respond to your shout except a DRG, THAT was not part of the strategy at all. So you "Made due" with a DRG and won anyways. Got items AND a sense of accomplishment.
R.I.P. challenge, you were fun.
