Christopher Lee, Legendary Movie Villain and Horror Icon, Dies at 93

Quote:
Christopher Lee, the mystical British actor whose haunting, intimidating performances as Count Dracula, the Frankenstein monster and Fu Manchu made him an icon of horror films and the cinematic embodiment of villainy, has died. He was 93.

According to media reports, Lee died on Sunday morning, June 7 at Westminster Hospital in London after being admitted for respiratory problems and heart failure. The Guardian reported that his wife, former Danish model and painter Gitte Kroencke, decided to release the news days later in order to inform family members first. The couple had been married since 1961.

Thus passes a true legend of cinema, stage, and so many other forms of entertainment. Adieu, Lord Summerisle.

They say that.

But frankly, there are so few people alive on par with his achievements in his field that it would be stunning for two more similarly impactful deaths.

Ugh. I missed that one.

Didn't share the fame or ifluence of Lee, but I'll always know him as the greatest Fagin to ever take the role.

Although he was typically cast in villainous roles, for me, he certainly had an undeniable screen presence.

While most people tended to hate the Roger Moore era of Bond films, my fave of that was The Man with the Golden Gun...I just really liked the genre-feel of that, and Lee did a great job with what would otherwise be a very one-dimensional character.

Of the later work, while his Star Wars role wasn't very deep or demanding, he certainly went all-out for Jackson's LotR. I remember reading that he was a huge Tolkein fan, to the point of being a stickler for exact phrasing and pronunciation of place names, characters, etc. Really amazing actor, for sure. :/

EDIT: As for Moody, I remember once reading he was offered the role of The Doctor, for what was to be Jon Pertwee's turn as the Third Doctor. That would have been an interesting spin, I'd think, as he also would have made a great "personable" Doctor (compared to Hartnell/Troughton's incarnations.)

He actually was a personal acquaintance of Tolkien, if not close friends, so there was some degree of duty he felt to the films, I think. And yes, he was a force on and off screen in the LotR films.

I think he'd have made an excellent Doctor, though it's hard to imagine anyone else in Pertwee's turn as our favorite Galifreyan.

Absolutely. He has lived a full life and toward the end knew he couldn't live forever and rededicated himself to his craft; it helped keep him going and in turn give to his fans.

Also, beyond entertainment, let us not forget that he was in the SAS's precursor agency in WWII and served his country with distinction in the special intellgence field.

Christopher Lee as the Doctor?

Holy ***, I want that alternate universe now. Ditto on George Lazenby doing more Bond rather than Roger Moore.

Let's do both! Ron Moody as The Doctor, squaring off against Christopher Lee's Master.
