It basically feels like they're shutting down the game if they're truly just going to stop releasing content after November. It has to feel like it's going somewhere.

I can't imagine many people sticking around either.

There's plenty of content and stories to follow currently in the game. What's relevant in terms of gear progression is another story. Who knows, since the game is going to windows only platform post 2016 then it may be easier for them to push out updated content at a later date.
Everyone sounds so god damn pessimistic. Come'on lets keep a little optimism here

As far as gear progression, I'd imagine reforging empy gear will have a lot of people busy for quite a while. There's likely going to be a good amount of difficult content in the new mini series as well. How long that ride will last is up in the air.

If there's nothing else after this final content, I'm cool with that. I came back about 2 years ago, and I was absolutely shocked SE was dishing out new content on a monthly basis for a game this old. That obviously couldn't last forever.

I'm just glad I get the opportunity to finish up this final content, and get severly bored with the game and quit on my own terms. It could be a year from now, or 3. No idea.

FFXI servers turned down, so is Scragg gonna turn down FFXIAH now too?
Not as long as there's P&R.

I've got enough shitposts to keep this forum alive another 2-3 years if Scragg doesn't shut the whole thing down, abortion style.

That sounds like a challenge care to wager a bet !

This game has gone though many long periods of no real new content, between expansions/addons etc, the fact that people keep playing during these "down" times is what keeps SE coming back with new content.

Negative Nancys might say its the end but if enough keep paying and playing and returning for "one last blast" and make it viable after November for them to continue who knows?

We all knew Soa content updates wouldn't last forever but with the mobile platform/vita which could be really popular coming and possibly bringing people to the windows platform and with fewer limitations on the windows client it seems like it is a positive announcement to me.

This^

The game is one of the oldest running MMOs on the market and has been the most profitable game for SE. They won't let the game just die.

I was just correcting the corrector. If I didn't know to not take you seriously, I'd think you were a young/old man/woman liberal Republican women-hating feminist. Which might actually be true, but that's only because you're the only person that could find a way to make that work.

No future PS2 or 360 support likely means no patches for them addressing their issues, unless there is something on SE's end regarding further effort to keep them connected. The support drop for EU/etc languages meant no more interface/etc sure, but no more bilingual support as well. And at this point I don't know any nonJP or CN players who cannot speak english.
Reread the post by SE and seems I misread "service" as "support" somehow. To be fair I was in the ER.

Server merges are likely later as population dwindles. Why did people quit a year ago? Two? Three? They felt FFXI was dying. Surely now we see it stated plainly but the people who kept playing weren't screaming about its life being eternal. Play until you run out of things to do. Ways to entertain yourself. Time to waste. Try a new job. Run odd setups just to show you can. Make a DD mage. Make a new character and clear every NM you never got to back at 75 cap. Numerous options exist, this game only dies when you decide it does.

So, I always planned to re-enact various screens from my first year of XI at some point before I finally laid it down.

I'll probably finish it off with this and logout in Gustaberg

I did all the events for many years, but then stopped doing them as they became repeats each year. I'll probably do them all on this last go-around for nostalgia.

May move over to a pvp server and get some final ballista moments in. It died on my server back when the cap was still 75 and it was one of my favorite things to do. May be interesting to get some matches in with one of the active ballista servers on the way out.

Have made a lot of good friends in this game. Many I talk to regularly, even if never having played on the same server (various forums). I have met a handful of you personally. When I jump back on, I guess I'll see how many more friends I can make on the way out. You all are *** fantastic people

You guys are missing the true bonus of this recent announcement:

With no new content, you literally have endless amounts of time to cap all of your jobs' Job Points, and Gifts! Though, you'd probably be way too strong for any content still in the game at that point, but clearly, the advantages of having nothing "new" come out was SE's way of further pushing this Gifts Agenda as the "thing to do" in FFXI going forward.

Also, don't forget that "no new content" means no Su3 gear. You guys can rejoice at the end of your character progression with 410 Job points. What an accomplishment.

Seeing this news, I'd like to return and experience all that I've missed out on.

Unfortunately, I quit before SoA (I did try to come back for that but had no LS, so that "return" ended rather quickly), and I'm sure there's been a crapton of new content and concepts introduced since. I've seen reference to some of them: item levels, some kind of AI buddy system or something, and so on.

What I worry about, and what holds me back from returning, is that I don't want to return only to either be shouting for help for hours to do old content nobody is doing anymore or to be turned away from doing any current content because my character isn't up to snuff. And I get the vibe that both of those would be likely, unless I somehow found myself a Linkshell that would bring me up to speed, but most people will (understandably) be doing all the new stuff. It's basically what happened when I did try to return for SoA. /sigh

The add-ons could be good if Tanaka is working on them.

Might make a new sky/sea area that lasts years !

I am clinging to hope because mmo's that are profitable just don't die. Dark Age of Camelot is older than FFXI, and has a significantly lesser population (active 3-6k players daily) on a single server cluster. The game still gets updates (visual and content).
The whole conference note sounds like they want to dwindle the game to a point where its more easier to manage and support and at the same time use resources to explore other paths to expand upon the game.

No, lol. Talk about reaching.

They want to stop making content for it, and let it play out with sub fee's until the playerbase is so thin there is no profit.

Basically milk you for every penny you're worth, like they've been doing for years, the difference here is they're confessing to screwing you I guess.

How does "We plan for this to be a grand conclusion to the FINAL FANTASY series' first MMORPG" and "but there will continue to be minor version updates that address bugs and contain various balance adjustments" make it sound like they'll be looking to "explore other paths to expand upon the game"? Not being a net-troll here, just doesn't seem like what they're saying at all. Sounds to me more like, 'if it's broken, we'll fix it, but other than that you're getting nothing'. I could be wrong tho.

QoL adjustments will probably be done for as well.

Talk about hopes of 100 inventory slots being crushed ; ;

Hey they just said they are closing the main storyline!

Look at SE in recent years- has closing the main storyline meant SHEEEAT at all?@ Of course not! There will still be plenty of updates and in my opinion, now that the heaviness is out of the way and the game 'is what it is', heck even more people might come to participate in the endgame goodness that follows^^ have faith, poodles!

Other MMOs that are still going strong even now, and are either almost as old, or older than, FFXI:
World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2... You don't often see new content released for either one, but when you do it's usually something big.

Comparing FFXI to either one of those games is delusional, sorry.

I really wished they'd considered selling FFXI to someone after the update. FFXI could get a decent market if they added some early game content, made something to enable F2P and pushed it like that.

As it stands I'd rather have a F2P FFXI that failed than a slow stagnation into death.

No more main story = no more expansions etc dude, it's done.

No more updates spelled out for you by se this morning and you are still clinging to some false hope. Now it's upto you how long the March - November updates we get, will keep you playing, that's a diffrent story.

I think it's awesome they decided to convert ffxi to a mobile-app like game. Think about it- if a game as complex as ffxi is the standard for mobile/app based MMORPGs- who can compete?! NO ONE. And since their hardware requirements are so low, to begin with... it's just perfect. Smart move on SE's part, IMHO.

Now, if this means they're gonna tone down battles with HNMs and the like because touch-based cats won't be able to react/respond quickly enough.... idk. I can only imagine further integration with the (already AWESOME) GUI.
