def a server merge, new alliance content would be awesome although i wont hold my breath, would be cool for a new add on as well, although not into the idea with sinking more money into something i already hate pouring money into...

Anyway if the merge comes like we all expect, I just hope I drift on a server where there's people I know.
Since they're holding a press conference to announce it, I'm optimistic it will be good news, who wants to hold a media event for bad news with press that would ask all sorts of questions that you may not want to answer then? It also wouldn't be a minor content announcement but maybe some new add-ons?

Here's hoping it is a new expansion or add-ons, according to the Square Enix president:
Square Enix’s personal resolution for fiscal year 2015, according to Matsuda, is “a box of surprises.” This apparently refers to how well the company can deliver in terms of releasing surprising and interesting works.
Also, I really don't think it's a F2P announcement, the only way those ever "work" is to get a constant stream of new players which FFXI doesn't have nor would I think SE wants to invest in a large marketing campaign to do this. Also would require a graphics and engine overhaul to compete with newer games

Much as you guys don't like F2P from a business standpoint it make way more money than monthly fees.

They've already posted that they wouldn't be doing this with the next iLvl increase.

Heres my thinking on this. If theres been a trademark swirling around SE since October, its likely and expansion or mini-Expansion.
But the best thing SE could do for the moment would be to cut PS2 support (its been loooooooong since needed) and merger servers. Whats the current # in use now?

And there are lots of things players would buy if given the opportunity to. The basic problem is avoiding turning the game into 'pay to win'.
I highly doubt XI will ever go F2P however. Perhaps the addition of a cash shop for various things but totally? I doubt it.
Server consolidation has been needed for months however.
