Search "Islam and violence" on Google yourself. You're talking about a major piece of theological discussion. I've read a bit on it and I'd be lying if I said I've even scratched the surface.
The bottom line is that among the Muslim population there is a percentage -- and don't forget that even 1% is over 10 million people -- worldwide who interpret their holy texts as demanding violent persuasion against non-believers.
The vast majority of them don't believe this. But again, with the numbers we're talking, that's still an awful lot of people ready to kill just for religion alone.
