Well he was thought for centuries, probably started around the Renaissance, to be a demi-god. You can look at artwork and see the Pope has always been painted at a much higher rank than "mere mortals."

He's not a false idol in the same way a saint you pray to isn't a false idol. They are a method of communication with God. (e.g. confession: when you confess the priest himself isn't absolving your sins. He's absolving your sins in the name of the Trinity. So technically the Trinity is forgiving you and the priest is just facilitating the procedure)
