The real question is why haven't we gone back yet and started mining it?

At least, in part, because of this.

TL;DR: Once it becomes a profitable venture for private industry we're going to probably see a new wave of imperialism, this time in space.

Prepare your anus and expect the headline:
Hillary Clinton, Empress of the Moon
Championed by Chancellor Gore, who has ridden the mighty moon worm
Isn't Newt the one pushing for a moon base?

In related news

Quote:
Yuri Milner, an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, is throwing $100 million at the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Powerful radio and optical telescopes will be drafted to listen and look for interstellar broadcasts, Milner announced July 20 at a news conference in London. The data will be made publicly available so that anyone can lend a hand in the hunt for E.T.

The plan is to listen and look for radio and laser transmissions from 1 million of the sun’s closest neighbors in addition to 100 of the nearest galaxies. The initiative, named Breakthrough Listen, guarantees up to 25 percent of the time available on two radio telescopes: Green Bank in West Virginia and Parkes in Australia. These instruments should be able to pick up transmissions as powerful as aircraft radar coming from any one of the 1,000 nearest stars.

And just in case aliens consider radio technology to be passé, the Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory near San Jose, Calif., will be on the lookout for visible flashes from laser-based communications.

The money, to be spent over the next 10 years, will also help develop the software needed to efficiently eavesdrop on our fellow galactic citizens.
SETI and Hawkings are in it too.

Grab your ear trumpets and start listening too guys!

Good. Remind him of this as he ages. Always be angry at what you can't reach and use that as motivation to bring it within your grasp!

So batshit insane people who don't believe in science's findings get to be validated because they continue disregarding science.

*** perfect. More (admittedly subjective in this case) proof there's no god, but they'll take it as proof of the contrary and gloat about the win.

Because we talked about it just the other day, worth sharing:

Spain’s unused, billion-euro Don Quixote airport is about to be sold to a Chinese investor for just $11,000

Quote:
In 2006, amid a construction boom in Spain, a tiny town with a population a little over 75,000 people an hour outside Madrid built an airport for €1 billion ($1.1 billion). The town, Ciudad Real, at the time named the new airport after Don Quixote, the windmill-fighting fictional character famous for his delusions of grandeur.

Fittingly, it turns out.

Just a few years later, the construction boom turned into a bust when the bubble burst, making Spain one of the hardest hit countries as the financial crisis swept the world and effectively mothballing the airport.

Now, a Chinese investment company is set to buy the airport former known as Don Quixote—for a paltry €10,000, or $11,000. In fact, it was the only bidder.

If I had known (and if I had any idea wtf to do with it), I'd have bought the bloody thing. Make my own little kingdom in the lovely Espana.

This is why I love the P&R people here...

You're all crazy and it makes me laugh.

Now excuse me while I make more extravagant sums of money from the Chinese.

Well that and pick up hot Serbian chicks. (Sorry, that's why I've been away for the past two days or so. The best part was when she said I reminded her of her father.)

Actually its due to the costs of getting there.

We need a space ship launching rail gun climbing the Andes or a space elevator to make it economical.

And a LOT of exploration to know where to mine.

Truth be told I've used that phrase a lot (regarding one's imaginary friend) and it's an insult to all other imaginary friends and I apologize for that.

Trust me a belief in Science is just as silly as you think religion is.

Science is the ultimate smug thing that takes itself too seriously. Like it is holier than thou.

Violence I think is in our DNA. So no belief or lack of. Is going to make people less violent.

Again. I've never seen news of anyone screaming, "FOR SCIENCE!" before shooting someone of an opposing religion/culture.

Whine about "smugness" all you want.

But generally speaking you want to work on fixing the hole in the sinking ship before worrying about if the sales are an offensive color.
