How do you teach abstinence anyways?

Saying the sentence, 100% safest way to avoid an unwanted pregnancy or STD's is not having sex? That's pretty much all there is to it and I'm sure they already "teach" that.

"Also, if you don't remain pure, God will turn his back on thee."

pretty much you just gather together pictures from the internet or medical journals of mangled up genitals ravaged by disease and then you shove those pictures in the kids faces and scream at them telling em this is what happens when you have sex!!! God will rain down his punishments upon you and mark you for life!!!!

No, they fill in the gaps with things like pledges, songs, terrible mock-SNL sketches, and nifty tin jewelry. It's all about trying to make abstinence cool, rather than actually educating kids about the consequences.

Well, assuming I'd have been in news from roughly 1955-2000, and probably a reporter out and about the first 15 years or so of that, yeah. I probably would have been involved in some riots and stuff via reporting them, and maybe even Vietnam.

I probably would have been on the receiving end of violence more than once. And maybe the giving end too, assuming overseas reporting and drafting practices.

I could have lived Joker's life in Full Metal Jacket.

I don't know how to take that.

Yeah. I was pretty sure we had reached the conclusion all politicians live firmly in a Washington, DC dreamworld where facts and real people have no meaning, it's just ideology and gratuitously pleasuring your corporate owners.

Oh, there is MUCH more to it than that.

You have to teach that rubbers break and pills fail, so there is really no reason to use contraception.

Remember, the main idea of abstinence "education" is to increase the teen birth rate.

Well obviously.

I'm a print journalist, not broadcast.

But given the time frame, Tom Brokaw would be a better comparison anyhow.

Well we will never say that you don't have a high opinion of yourself...

Would Brokaw have bitched out on the career like you did and made excuses about the industry if he was born when you were?

I wasn't talking myself up. I was picking a more accurate analogy for you. Cronkite was older than the time frame we were discussing was all.

Brokaw was always full of ***anyhow. "Greatest generation" my ***.

I think I could have been a world-class NHL defenceman if I had just been born somewhere that actually had youth hockey.

But that may actually be me thinking too highly of myself.

Well, the Boomers' were able to enjoy the benefits of their fathers' GI Bills. Mmmm...Life on the dole, right?

Yeah...On the fence about delving into this. Most of us would have to give a tip o' the hat to our parents, as individuals, but not sure if Baby Boomers as a whole should receive accolades.

We should probably shut up now. Every generation suffers from foot-in-mouth disease.
