Too many people. Should be the official slogan.
I sorta felt like Homer when he visited NYC. Lakshmi.Sparthosx said: » Odin.Jassik said: » Bismarck.Zenim said: » You mean yesterday it was religious freedom to murder people Then religious freedom to enslave people Now religious freedom to discriminate against people It's good progress, society is forcing change. LGB equality is happening, the T is lagging a bit behind, but eventually equality will happen, at least in terms of legal treatment. Millenials are overwhelmingly accepting of the LGBT community, and this issue will essentially die off. I live in NYC and I can count how many times ive had an interaction with someone transgender. It's such a rare occurrence most people simply haven't had the exposure. I've had one semi-close friend that is trans, however, I haven't had much contact with her in several years. I don't think many people, even in metropolitan areas, outside of the community have much interaction with them. As well, I'm sure I've walked past them on the street and never been the wiser. Just because something isn't in your face doesn't mean it's not there, and likewise, if they aren't individuals and are just an abstract group, it's much harder to understand them. Offline

I will say the view from the Empire State building is worth the trip. Everything else was kinda meh.
Ragnarok.Nausi said: » Another false narrative. 24 other states have similar laws (Obama signed one himself when he was a legislator in IL), and there's also a federal law (remember hobby lobby and abortive contraception). Have you read the law? Can you point out where it says discrimination against gays is allowed? Ragnarok.Nausi said: » There is no text in the law that permits discrimination based on sexual orientation, only one that protects people practicing their religious freedom. Religious freedom doesn't grant a license to do whatever the *** you want under the guise of whatever *** beliefs to which people subscribe. No one is stopping Christians from believing all of us butt pirates are going to burn for eternity in our rightful place at Satan's taint. The line gets drawn at actual discrimination based on those beliefs. That isn't a right, sorries :( Offline

Speaking of discrimination I signed up on blackpeoplemeet.com and turns out I'm not black enough !
I rarely praise any "journalism" that comes out of Cracked.com, but I figured this one was well-written enough and very pertinent to what goes on here that I'm going to link it.
5 Reasons You Get Tricked Into Believing Stupid Things That's the URL title, btw. The actual title of the article became "5 Brainwashing Tricks That Work No Matter How Smart You Are" because the title guy at Cracked is an idiot. fonewear said: » Speaking of discrimination I signed up on blackpeoplemeet.com and turns out I'm not black enough ! blackpeoplemeet.com <- Not racist whitepeoplemeet.com <- SUPER racist Logic! Huff Po: Connecticut Governor bans gov't travel to Indiana
Fox News: Seattle mayor, Washington Governor ban gov't travel to Indiana Angie's List cancels Indy expansion Ouch! The hits just keep on coming for this pointless law. So far I haven't head of a single Indiana citizen benefiting from this law, but there sure are a lot of people losing money. Shouldn't it be the unalienable right of a business to refuse its products or services to anyone without need for explanation.
A business is my property, it belongs to me. I may choose to do with my property as I please as long as my actions do not endanger others. In the UK this is how the law works, if a shopkeeper thinks your eyebrows are too close together he can refuse to serve you. If businesses were forced to sell their products to everyone simply by virtue of the fact they sell them to other people, then shouldn't ISIS be able to purchase weapons from American weapon manufacturers? No, and thats a stupid example.
Shiva.Viciousss said: » No, and thats a stupid example. Your well reasoned and thought provoking response has opened my eyes to the error of my ways. Hallelujah I see the light! I guess the UK doesn't have anti-discrimination laws, or they do and he just doesn't know about them.
Shiva.Viciousss said: » I guess the UK doesn't have anti-discrimination laws, or they do and he just doesn't know about them. This is nothing to do with discrimination and everything to do with property law. The choice to sell my property is exactly that, a choice. You can refuse service to whoever as long as you're not moronic enough to do it in a way that violates discrimination laws. A concept the bigots of the country haven't quite yet figured out.
And, no, businesses do not have inalienable rights. |
