I'll remain skeptical about the FCC trying to go that route, if only because they haven't gone there yet despite having had power for even longer than the EPA. But time will tell.

Asura.Kingnobody said: » Is that an acceptable fine in your mind? How would you like to be fined $XXX amount of money from a government agency just for living? I do that every year. Pretty sure it's why you have a job. :p Phoenix.Amandarius said: » Are you all having problems with the Internet that I don't know about? Are you finding it all too free for your liking? Asura.Kingnobody said: » I'm not sure I understand that question, can you clarify it for me please? There's also the question of how much of that money is reaching individuals. Qatar is a perfect example of a place where the per-person income looks amazing, but a cursory examination of the place indicates that a ridiculous proportion live in crippling, deadly poverty. If we're really going to use money as a means of saying which country is doing better, it seems like it should compare something like median income to cost-of-living and somehow adjust for how many people are actually paid within one standard deviation of median income (again, Qatar looks great if you fail to do that last thing). Bear in mind that I'm not an economist and haven't studied this, so if I'm way off in left field, tell me. I just can't wrap my head around why gross production is an adequate measure of the success of individual citizens. Offline

You know what I did when I had Netflix spent more time looking for a decent movie than actually watching movies...

You're damn right I read newspapers !
I also ride my bicycle and do stuff that doesn't require 100/mbps to watch some overpriced actor entertain me ! When it comes to movies I'm a bitter old man. Back in my day they had good movies ! Shiva.Onorgul said: » If I have 10 people assembling widgets all day, why should the gross amount of widgets I produce be compared favorably or unfavorably to the gross amount of widgets produced by a rival company with 1,000 people doing assembly? The value of the production is greater overall if you have more people producing more products. The basic argument is: My Netflix my Netflix how dare you prevent me from watching a terrible Will Ferrel movie !
The biggest problem for internet is that we are still stuck using DSL and cable when the future is fiber optic. Considering I'm one of the few people who actually detest him and his movies, na.

From the site I posted Montana has the least broadband coverage in the US.

I do see the implied connection between good education and good economy, but my concern here is that I don't know if the "good economy" metric being used is accurate. I'm also not sure if it accounts for a variety of other factors, including tax rates, social services, and measures of happiness. For all that these discussions tend to be distilled down to who has more money, it's been repeatedly demonstrated that the richest people nonetheless feel insecure in their wealth and appear to be rather unhappy as a consequence. Given the choice between an education that leaves my brain more able and adept but also trains me to be less concerned with material wealth or an education that teaches me how to be rich but unhappy, I'm going to lean to the former. Indeed, that's exactly how I do live my life. I suspect New Englanders have a lot in common with Scandinavians on these matters. fonewear said: » The basic argument is: My Netflix my Netflix how dare you prevent me from watching a terrible Will Ferrel movie ! Netflix was the biggest, most obvious use of bandwidth throttling to force a company out of business. There are other, smaller examples, but you'd have to be told who the company is and how the *** was achieved. Netflix is just a convenient example, it has nothing to do with whether someone likes or doesn't like Netflix. Amazon, Hulu, and YouTube have all be subject to similar threats, and I'm sure that ISPs have been looking closely at Activision to throttle World of Warcraft subscribers until they give them more money. It's literally a shake-down. It doesn't matter whether it's Netflix or Joe's Laundry that was the victim. |
