Library is free here. Damned taxpayers being forced to fund educational opportunity for all. THIEVING government.

Looks around for the post that said libraries should not be funded.. Yup, none..

Why would you use a phrase like "mooching" for something that's fundamentally unanimous in funding/support and ubiquitous to virtually every American community? It's almost like you want people to have accessible information/education but have severe reservations about it.

What's the difference between libraries being funded by taxpayer dollars and college education? In both cases the rich are paying for the poor right?

If you want books or internet buy them yourself. Stop looking to the government for copies of the latest hentai.

Libraries have been publicly funded forever. No reason to stop.

College isn't free and does not need to be. Go use the library..

Context is everything.

I do think people should have accessible information and education. They do, libraries and grade school.

I also believe that the cord needs cut at some point. After grade school.

Thanks Ted Cruz.

May as well gut the department of education while we're at it.

We don't need no book learnin'.

HS was designed to be a way of educating the populace to take on the jobs of the day. Thus, after HS you were ready for the 'real world'. Would you say that on average today you reach the middle class on a HS diploma?

Today, the jobs of the day require Bachelor degrees and higher and will continue to require more technical expertise as America continues its race against mechanization.

We already know mechanization and automation are outpacing our policy and budgets by a landslide. So it's no surprise that even somewhere as municipal as Ontario are beginning to practice the concept of basic income.

America obviously has significant stigmas and reservations behind that, but to that I say:

You are given the tools to achieve middle class or higher in HS. Whether you take advantage of those tools is completely up to you.
If you excel you even have the opportunity to get scholarships that pay for your college!

Most HS give the opportunity to go to a trade school during HS and learn a trade that pays extremely well! Amazing!

People aren't equal, and never will be. they should however, be provided equal opportunity. are we doing that? I don't know.

It's a resounding no on equal opportunity. Being born in a shitty neighborhood and having to attend an underfunded public school is already a huge minus before you can think for yourself. Parents also qualify. As does your ability to access extracurricular activities which are fundamental to developing hobbies that could become marketable talents.

It'd be a hard argument to make that future generations are going to be better off than the last two.

Dude, even fast food wants you to have a 2 year diploma from college. A HS diploma alone leaves you wide open to making markedly less than your college peers regardless of choices.

On average.

The last bastion of "make middle class money without a degree" has been getting your CDL and driving a truck for a while now; and self-driving trucks are coming for those jobs, too.

That's going to be a hell of a thing, when that happens.

I remember watching a segment where a trucking company CEO was all but shouting that he's got all these jobs and can't find anyone to take them. 50-60k/yr jobs.

His selling point was that you could do it short term in your 20s then move on since in that age bracket it's less likely you have obligations that you need to be tied down for. But it's trucking. I'd say many people don't even know they exist considering the stereotypes around truckers.

Make trucking cool or something. Manbuns, lumberjack beards, front cover of GQ. Wanna ride my rig innuendos and the like.

Play down the exhaustion and flipping your 18 wheels on the highway because you didn't rest. Ain't nobody got time to spill thousands of pounds of ramen soup all over the freeway.

Money better be allocated for infrastructure that would provide self-driving semis their own lane.

I'm still for reduction of trucks and implementing more high speed rails.

But that would require other big changes.

I'm curious, how much was needed for these jobs? Did he provide the vehicle, or you required to own your truck in order to be employed? That could be huge barrier to getting work as a truck driver in your early 20's.

Hey I have an idea, use the freaking internet, much more efficient than burning all that carbon getting down to the library.

It might cost you 15-50 bucks a month for access though. I have a solution...
