Quote: Waffle House makes waitress return $1,000 tip
The company doesn't allow large gratuities by credit card, in case the tipper wants a refund later. The policy is drawing criticism.
A Waffle House waitress who received a $1,000 tip says she was forced to give the money back to her customer.
Shaina Brown has worked the late shift at a Waffle House in Raleigh, N.C., for seven years.
She told Josh Shaffer at The Raleigh News-Observer that she was working at 3 a.m. on Mother's Day when a customer said, "I'm going to bless you tonight."
The customer added a $1,500 tip to the credit card receipt, instructing Brown to take $1,000 and give $500 to a woman at a nearby table.
Shaffer confirmed the tip with the customer, a local businessman.
But Brown, a mother of two, didn't get to keep the tip.
A Waffle House spokeswoman told the newspaper that it's procedure to refund large tips to customers.
"Generous tippers are asked to tip again by cash or check," Shaffer writes. "The restaurant handles it that way, she explained, in case the customer decides to dispute the tip later or ask for a refund."
The businessman said he plans to send Brown a check.
But Shaffer writes that he disagrees with Waffle House's policy.
"You don’t put up roadblocks to charity. You don’t make it hard for people to be nice, or they’ll give up trying," he writes. "And more than anything, you don’t dump on your own people as a matter of policy."
Since Shaffer reported on the incident, many customers have taken to Waffle House's Facebook page to express their opinions.
While most customers side with the server, others see the logic behind Waffle House's policy.
"People who leave thousand dollar tips or otherwise give large amounts of money to strangers are often suffering from a neuropsychiatric condition (manic episode, major depression, dementia) or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs," one customer writes. "Waffle House's policy is very responsible and avoids potential lawsuits from the gift-givers or their families."

Tips are not charity, but additional payment of a meal for services provided....

Boo, I was hoping for a "Businessmen are treating hard working waitresses like strippers" angle.
You had one job Huffington Post.

That sucks that Waffle House forced her to return it, but on the flip side, I can understand why.
Credit Cards offer protection to cardholders that debit cards do not - any transaction made by credit card can be disputed after the fact, with the funds returned to the cardholder IF the merchant is not able to provide reasonable proof that the cardholder made a legitimate purchase.
Since the tip was made via credit card, that protection would have applied. The customer could very easily dispute the transaction, forcing the credit card company to launch an investigation that could take up to 90 days (30 days from the initial dispute, 60 days for the credit card company to resolve).
If a dispute was made, Waffle House would ultimately have to refund the tip amount, and would either have to absorb the cost, or try to collect it from the employee down the line, which would likely cause unwanted legal trouble.
So, Waffle House chose door number 3 - refuse the tip in the first place. Sucks for the employee, but it steers the company away from potential losses.
If the customer were serious about leaving a tip of that amount, they should have written a check or paid in cash.

500$ or even 1000$ wouldnt make that possible. Its just a drop in the bucket. Thats not even rent in most places.

Never said you could live off it, just said she should of just taken it and left to a better job. Its pretty easy to get a job that pays better than a Waffle House.

You'd be surprised how much someone can make at those jobs... most of the time more than someone who goes to college for an Associate's degree.. with no debt necessary. It's a reason why you see people doing that same job for years and years... why leave when the money is good?
Then again, you have to bust your butt for that money as well, so there is a downside.. I guess.

Maybe its just because of where I am from but you can easily make 3x min wage off tips from Waffle house. I wouldn't give that up to work min wage at a department store or call center. Hell I made less money working as a Manager than as a waiter. I don't know where people get these unrealistic views of the job markets.
Hell I was making more money as a waiter than I did my first year and a half in the US Navy.

Here where I live in Texas, about 30 min outside of Dallas, there are plenty of jobs where you can make anywhere from 15-20$/hr starting out. With great benefits to boot.

Where I was working Southern Georgia most people are still making 7.50/hour. Heck as a IT Director(Manager for IT Dept.) for an Auto Group there I was only making 10/hr.

How often is one really getting 1000 tips in the first places lol. But having a little knowledge of the policies of the company you work for could have avoided the whole situation(Policy of the store I worked at was anything over 30% had to be Cash/check). As someone already stated large tips on credit cards can become issues. So you can't really blame the company for having a CYA policy.

The business made a really good point. They cannot allow a waitress to accept large tips through credit card which could be taken into court used against the business as if theft. Businesses operate for money and it doesn't make sense to allow anything that could cause for lack of value like bad PR for theft or a lawsuit. Credit card donating is fishy anyways. Perhaps they are getting a high credit bill that can't be afforded themselves. There are way too many good reasons not to accept large credit card tips. If someone is truly so monetarily well off, than they can hand out money that they currently own. Some older people get a little senile and start shelling out money, sadly often to vultures which probably makes some of these older folks want to just throw the money at someone that is a hard workers that makes ***pay. It would be really nice if the cook was given a large tip, those guys get no tips or recognition for the service of the restaurant and often get 1/3 of what the girls get.

I hate the whole "tip based on cost of the meal" thing. Why should I tip more just 'cause the meal was more expensive? I tip based on how much the waiter/waitress had to do to deliver the food/drinks/etc. and how good they were at performing their job and improving the atmosphere, not how much I paid for my steak.
