Seattle enacts $15 minimum wage, a phased in big dream
Article without the ordnance itself but its complex.
Selected quotes:
Quote: Phased in over three to seven years, Seattle will have the highest minimum wage in America. We’ll still be a couple dollars below Australia....
“While this is a bold proposal, it is a moderate proposal: There’s a seven-year phase in,” Mayor Ed Murray said. The process of compromise brought “huge wins” for business, particularly small business, during implementation, the mayor added....
Inside the council chamber, however, attacks on the plan came from the left. Backed by a crowd of chanting supporters — and speaking to the crowd — Socialist City Council member Kshama Sawant tried to rollback provisions such as training wages and a temporary incorporation of tips into the $15 wage base....
At the same time, Sawant was declaring victory, saying that the battle for a $15-an-hour wage was “won on the streets,” adding, “We defeated the arguments of business in the corporate media....”
The sharpest critique of Seattle’s process has come from David Meinert, owner of The Comet Tavern and 5-Point Cafe, and a member of Murray’s task force. Meinert aired blunt opinions of the wage plan on his Facebook page last week....
“We have a messy ordinance with four different minimum wages, different phase in times for different businesses, a move away from standard definitions of what a business is and what an employee is, and confusing elements like ‘phasing out’ of tips and health care benefits.”

What good is a $15dollar minimum wage when there's no minimum wage positions? Seems a bit paradoxical no?

Grunge is just an excuse not to wash your ***. I know it makes you question your sexuality when a finger slips in and you enjoy it, but buttstink effects everyone!

When has conventional wisdom prevailed? People, especially the 1% are only concerned with their immediate gains.
They'd rather be Filthy rich and everybody broke, than everyone just be rich. I hope the 15 dollar min wage works out, but I honestly believe it will fail.

Starbucks is serious business though. That is where I try out Apple products before I don't buy them.
Seattle is a example of how America should be run. If you don't like something *** about it wait seven years then progress.

I had a moment of inspiration from this thread. I'm gonna start calling everyone from Washington State "Starbucks" in the most aggressive manner possible, and see if I can get that word turned into a racial slur.

My question is:
Is Starbucks (and any other company who's home office is in Seattle) going to raise the price of their product nation/worldwide to help pay for this labor increase, or will they just raise the price locally?
I'm pretty sure that prices will be raised with each pay increase over the next 7 years intercity, where businesses inside the city going out of business when people start shopping outside the city for their crap.

For every $1 of increase in wages the price of raw materials will increase $2.50 until the policy of easy money stops. At which point interest rates will sky rocket. I'm sure you can take it from there.

Except it's not more money. Otherwise we should have a $1000 USD/hr minimum wage so everyone can be rich and wealthy.
Logically there is no difference in $4/hr, $7.50/hr, $15/hr and $1000/hr. They must all function by the exact same set of rules. The reason unskilled service personal are not making $1000/hr is that their skillset is not rare enough nor profitable enough to create more then $1000/hr in profits for the business owner. Wages are determined by availability of personal with a particular skillset. Putting an artificial floor on wages only services to eliminate positions that would bring in less then that floor in profit for the owner. If an unskilled person's current job would bring in less then $15 USD/hr in profit to the owner, raising the wage eliminates their job. The only thing minimum wage laws do is reduce the number of positions available and / or raise the prices on products associated with minimum wage establishments.
Anyways the real reason the Democrats pushed for a "national" minimum wage, even though it had zero chance of success, is that many union positions use the minimum wage as an index for the amount the company must pay the union worker. Raising the minimum wage also raise's of union employees.

P. S. This isn't a national thing, its a Seattle thing.
As soon as someone actually prints the ordinance I will repost it here. Stay tuned, same bat time, same bat channel.

Reading the responses to this... very amusing.
Calling the greater Seattle area home I am excited to see this change happen, and I am no where near a min-wage employee (go go salaried management) mainly because it will push people up and off of welfare and food stamps, and open up more state/federal money for things like Schools!.
It is estimated that if a company like Walmart were to raise any employees (who are not already at or above the level of pay) pay to 13.86 an hour, it would cost the company 4.8 billion dollars. Do you know what that translates to for a company of that size? They would have to raise prices in their stores by 1.4% which would be between one and two cents per item in the store. 1 or 2 CENTS! not dollars, CENTS. and the same goes for any company that is large and takes in MILLIONS to BILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR. Now the mom and pop shops ... yes they will have a harder time but that is why they have 7 years to comply.
OH! Btw if everyone in the US made $15 an hour. We as a country would save somewhere around 300 million dollars in food stamps.

Haven't you heard? All the money is in property. Actually, property is one of the only assets that historically rise in value at a stable and steady rate.
On average you can double your investment within 20 years. At least in Texas (not sure about other states, I'm pretty sure Detroit is in the negatives right now).

However, right now this hasn't happened in the past 20 years.
It's part of the credit bubble.
I'll find the recent returns on property investment later. The real return is like 2-4% I think.
