Teenage Girls attempt to murder for Slender Man
I don’t know about any of you guys, but when I was 12-years-old I was pretty much a dumb ***, as most 12-year-olds are, but that being said I was also able to comprehend the ramifications of things like premeditated murder; I think the “young and dumb” argument falls short here… by a wide margin.
I have to agree. Pre-meditated murder is a serious thing, particularly because they tried to follow through on it a few times before they actually did it.
It was mentioned they worshipped Slender Man like a God, and even had plans to walk to the place they believed he lived. The parents should also be at fault here, to a certain degree, but the blame still lies with the children. Both girls conceded they knew exactly what they were doing, and understood with full comprehension what murder was. Kids want to be adults, and commit adult crimes, then they are going to face adult consequences and punishments. And save the "double standard" argumentative ***. There are vast amounts of reasons why children have different rights and protections than adults, and why, in extreme cases, children who commit heinous crimes are tried as adults. Most of them being that the scope of juvenile punishments don't fit the scope of the crime committed. It's shown in the article that they weren't really remorseful of stabbing their friend 19 times, but more so of trying to murder her instead, if not actually being caught. I haven't read much on this past the first page, but hopefully their lawyer gets them a psych evaluation, and competency tests, as I imagine they will probably fail miserably (at least from the story in the OP). These people need mental health care, not prison. These people need mental health care, not prison. However, these children, according to the OP did display the same understanding, and reasonable responsibility in planning this, as an adult would. There are also reasons why children have a different set of rights as aduts, and not all adults have the same privileges as each other. Not sure about Canada, but here they actually do.
I disagree on the same understanding as an adult, maybe a cult (which are delusional nut jobs on their own) but quite frankly that's a long debate that I don't have the energy or time for today. I'm sorry, I didn't realize that mental health care was only available to adults, news to me. I'm not saying that children shouldn't have different sets, just that I disagree with a double standard. Now you're taking things directly out of context to fit your argument. These kids require an adult level of mental health, because they displayed an adult level of understanding and responsibility in this case.
Giving them child level mental health care, would not be adequate for the scope or severity of what they had done. And believe me, there is a huge difference in mental health care between the two. And no, even in the united states, each state has it's own set of privileges - some are fairly similar in most regards. I could possibly see the same level of understanding as a cult more so than adult, but ultimately, since there is no known cult following for Slender Man, where people are regularly indoctrinated to follow the things he says or does, even that might be a stretch. Anyways, they chose, knowingly, to do something "for the sake of meeting Slender Man", and claimed to fully understand in the same mindset, the ramifications of their actions. I do believe they can still be salvaged and such, but the method of their "salvation", remains to see if it works positively, or negatively. Quote: Men are four times more likely than women to commit suicide, even though women attempt it more. So men are better at it! That's something else you gals will want to be workin' on. Well, if you want to be truly equal, you're gonna have to start taking your own lives in greater numbers. - George Carlin I read somewhere that females are more prone to violence than males in isolated instances. So in theory these girls are just going to become more dangerous to society if put in jail, etc. and then 'rehabilitated.' Won't happen. Wishful thinking at best.
Best thing to do is either take 'em out back and shoot 'em or send them to a North Korean labor camp. Not much choice, really. Should have stopped it before it happened, but it's far too late now. I kind of want to meet the parents, who are so uninvolved in their children's lives, that they failed to notice the months of plotting a murder and running away.
Also inb4 this gets taken to a jury and they turn on each other with a "She made me do it!" tossed in for good measure. I'm sure these girls will become productive members of society one day.

I highly doubt the key to successful parenting is treating your kids like pets with shock collars and monitoring devices. Or copious amounts of drugs.

I thought 12 was still dance recitals and little league? It seems like somewhere along this path someone would of talked about their interests and plots within earshot of an adult. I'm not totally blaming the parents, these girls are obviously *** up. But seriously, whatever happened to being in the same room as your kid for longer than a passing glance? And why the *** didn't you notice your 12 year old perusing creepypasta and the like enough to become infatuated with a modern boogey man? Fenrir.Weakness said: » I thought 12 was still dance recitals and little league? Also, I was still doing ballet performances at age 17 and my brother was wrestling at 18, so I'm not entirely sure what point you're trying to make by pointing out that kids have hobbies. Someone should alert the manufacturers of those products then.
Bismarck.Bloodrose said: » Forgot about the part where they then have to decipher those thoughts and conversations. I remember the first time I saw people on the internet talking about Kik and I'd thought it was a typo for "lol" (it probably is, but now has a separate meaning). After feeling confused for 5 minutes, I asked Google and, voilà, confusion gone. Maybe it was hard to figure out what the hell girls were talking about in 1991 if you, as a parent, hadn't memorized the names of all the boys in NKOTB, but there's no excuse today. You gotta put the fear of God into your kids. Then they'll never misbehave.
Is there ever an excuse for not being involved in your child's daily life?

Was more toward the social hobby and parent forced hobbies I was thinking. The age when everyone in your class still does it. I dunno, guess I just grew up living in Leave it to Beaver without a father figure. Dinner at the table at least one night a week, going to events like a museum or the zoo or the beach as a family unit. Despite being an angst ridden teen (like all teens) while doing family things, I truly appreciate and understand why my mother did it. I just can't see how a responsible parent would let this go under the radar at such a young age. Also, 12 seems young to be masturbating that much. |
