This sounds like it borders on the edge of legality.

Parents will receive items won by children younger than 18. that being said: I really wouldn't have a problem if they just gave them out. inb4 argument: people who shouldn't have guns, violent criminals and crazy people, shouldn't be in the general public, violent criminals should be in prison, and crazies should be in mental hospitals. Granted we could get into a long discussion about people going to church being crazy, but let's just avoid that for now. I'm beyond being surprised by political nonsense anymore, so I didn't read it too closely I guess. Just skimmed it. /blush. Jesus, Guns and Steaks. Praise the Lord!

They are doing background checks with the state and federal databases, and the guns are not being delivered on premises. The background checks alone will take 30 days to complete. I think it is a marketing ploy to get more people into that church to be honest. Lakshmi.Zerowone said: » Jesus, Guns and Steaks. Praise the Lord! If the steaks come with mashed potatoes, consider me tempted! So tasty. I think "use's" bothers me more than anything else.
I know reading is super tough. The last paragraph of the OP says it all. However, the background check only take 10-15 mins in most states besides the few with huge gun laws. Yes the government would just let the church give out guns without a background check....................

The church themselves are not dealing with weapons, nor are the being offered to absolutely anyone. It seems the proper legalities being observed. The amount of people that buy into the gun propaganda the media spews out on this site blows my mind... Learn to think for yourselves people.

The problem (or a problem) is that most seem to think they are geniuses on every subject. Anyone that doesn't agree with them must be wrong. And everyone just waits there turn to respond/mock. No ones willing to actually listen and learn or see a different perspective. Not to say that many ppl arnt wrong... Not that I don't agree with you. I 100% support your idea about this, I just don't think many people can tell the difference between propaganda and idea. This kinda reminds me of high school. In my town, there was a gun raffle for at least one football game per year. I think there was one for one basketball and one volleyball game per year too, but I can't remember. It never even occurred to us that there might be a problem with that, and as far as I can remember, no one who won one of those guns used it badly.
A church raffling them off doesn't really seem very different to me. I guess it's mildly disappointing (although not surprising) to me that any church would use money to buy weapons instead of feeding the poor like their god commanded them to, but then again maybe they will use proceeds from the raffle to help their communities. Or maybe the guns were donated, that's a possibility. Either way, it's not my job to dictate how they spend their cash, whether I agree with their priorities or not. I just can't understand why anyone would care enough about this one church's raffle to raise a fuss. Or maybe it's just me that has trouble raising up the energy for this to care. There's way too many other things for me to spend my energy on at the moment, maybe! What tickles me is this:
Quote: “We’re not doing it for the sake of the guns. We’re not doing it for any reason primarily than to help men understand the Gospel message is extremely relevant to their lives today,” said McAlister, team leader for Evangelism Church Planting and Collegiate Ministries for the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Additionally, I'd have few problems with this if they were raffling off hunting rifles. Long guns employed for hunting don't bug me. Handguns (and assault weapons, of course) are designed to kill humans, though, which seems very counter to the teachings of Jesus Christ. The article doesn't say if there is any control over what is purchased with the winning certificates, but it does talk about hunting culture, so I really do hope they're hunting rifles. Not sure which bothers me more; that a church is bribing people with guns, or that the kinds of people who live in that area can be bribed with guns.
In either case, Paducah KY won't be on my travel itinerary anytime soon. Steak Dinner for Jesus? Sign me up.
Also, this town looks hella small. What's the culture there? Lots of sport shooting / hunting? If so, the appeal of giving away guns is readily apparent. A quick glance at the census data says median income is 26k. 'nuff said. All guns are designed for one purpose: to fire a projectile, nothing more. |
