Wasn't most complaining that leigon was to hard when it first came out? it seems that when they try to make things hard people complain it's to hard, but when people finally figure it out it's to easy and in most cases they are using programs to help them I don't get it. back in the king days wasn't the only challange was who had the better bot? not the actual NM's themselves... I mean the only then i could see that took a team effort was dyna,B2,and sea?.. Hell look how long AV was sitting there unbother'd. then we wonder why SE is like man fk all of you take what you get...

they never figured it out it got nerf'd it also on release i remember the nm's used to move like WOE and aggro s every 1

Hate in legion was always touchy, and while it did get nerfed marginally, legion always had an err of mediocre difficulty that was based around luck with stuns. The difficulty is the huge AoE moves.

I left this game a long time ago to play a game that when you get good/great gear you don't just afk in town. Because of the updates where they killed HNMLs, I had nothing better to do. I went to Aion, better graphics, gear is for PvPing. I miss Final Fantasy but wont come back sadly. No matter what though, it feels like I just broke up with my first love lol!

Uhm... associating CoP missions with Legion just because they're "hard" is a bit stretching it, imho.
Also, as I said above CoP wasn't even as *hard* as people make it to be, if a group like mine managed to complete it in september 2005.

The problem with Legion imho wasn't just its difficulty, but rather three things:
1) Drops - there were several very cool things, but it wasn't the "jump" that someone expected, especially for such a jump in difficulty compared to what people had been used to at that point after years of Abyssea
2) Organization - Legion was a content made with an old phylosophy in a game that had irremediably changed. The world of HNMLS was dead, mostly, very few groups survived and hence had the skill, organization and people to face content like Legion
3) Habit - likely connected to the point above, after like, what? 2 years of abyssea? People became used to that sort of gameplay and got kinda spoiled.

All of this imho, of course.
Could say Legion was the right thing at the wrong time in the wrong way, maybe?

Yeah, they're basically failing at implementing vertical progression for entirely predictable reasons but not stopping because they assume it will somehow get better if they just keep doing it.
^ this.

And honestly, but this is even more subjective, I think the whole "Hey, let's try to make the game feel fresh again by completely changing the core model behind it and turning it into a tier-based game with vertical progression" was a really stupid idea for a 10 years old game who had already been shaken by something similar (Abyssea) and was hardly trying to recover and find balance among its several events and possibilities.
Altough I reckon if that was their real goal, they probably had no direction to take other than this.
(but to this extent? Really? Couldn't they do things in a bit softer and smoother way without all these jumps that frankly look unnecessary?)

FFXIV looks interesting but i have 7 years into the game and don't want to walk away from that.

Whoever is feeling like this, having a hard time to let go of their 11 characters, trust me: should at least try 14. It basically fixes all 11 flaws and it's a great game. I was playing for 5 years straight and 14 was finally the one game that pushed me out of 11 and made me realize all the fun I've been missing in other games.

But what turned me off 11 was the 6 hour Hulkan with almost 100 people in the zone. That was the point I realized what a mess they turned the game with this new expansion. And Delve was cool for 1 week, after that it was just repetitive.

I love 11 to death and it's still my favorite FF, but I'm having a blast on 14 and I plan on never coming back.

While I absolutely agree it's a great game and that everybody should try it, I don't agree with the rest.

It doesnt' "fix" anything. It's not a FFXI with "fixed things". It doesn't fix FFXI's flaws more than WoW or Rift or several other MMOs already did.
It's a completely different game from FFXI and while, differently from the previously mentioned MMOs and many others, there are a plethora of references to the FF world (SOME of which are directed at FFXI of course, but mostly they're for FF in general) it's a completely different game with quite different qualities, a completely different approach and different flaws (not many, tbh).

The moment you stop comparing FFXIV to FFXI and expecting an "FFXI HD plus with fixed flaws" is the moment you'll stop being disappointed by FFXIV and start enjoying it in all of its magnificence.

If you keep comparing the two and are a long time hardcore FFXI player who, despite all odds, really enjoyed FFXI even after trying other MMOs, then FFXIV will leave you excited maybe but with a very very sour and disappointing taste in your mouth.

I'll just say this: I quit ffxi shortly after the recent expansion for a number of personal and game-related reasons. After playing ffxiv casually since release, I can't see myself ever playing ffxi again. The UI in ffxiv is just too user-friendly and it makes ffxi feel like a dinosaur...and yes it will soon be extinct. Don't know how soon, but its days are numbered. Those of you still hanging on to your gear and in denial about ffxi's relevance to anything but staying in touch with friends are prolonging the inevitable. I get that you identify with your characters and some of you arent as cool in-game as you are out of it, and leaving a character behind that you spent so much time making a bad *** is a hard thing to do...but at some point you gotta come to grips with it.

Logged out at Blueblade Fell like a boss. Should have been Zi'tah since that zone holds so many memories good and bad for me.

Between the loss of my LS, my gf, my will to play and the slow burn of the game it could last another 10 years and I wouldn't be happy anymore. If XI still does it for you, awesome.

XI isn't XI without the people that make the game worth playing. It's probably why other MMOs fail to keep my attention.

Quote:
Seas invite in the evening sun
To light the somber abyss.
Clouds dance up with the heavens' stars,
Chanting an air of joyous bliss
Water fades back from blue to jade,
Guiding young rainbows high.
Flowers bloom into reds and whites,
Quenching our hearts as they run dry.
Angels chained by a beast locked in slumber.
Sin washed away by the swift flow of time.
I may know the answers.
Journeys over snow and sand.
What twist in fate has brought us
To tread upon this land?
Blessed by light and the burden of shadows.
Souls abide to an endless desire.
I may know the answers,
Though one question I still hear.
What twist in fate has brought us
To roads that run so near?
Distant worlds together.
Miracles from realms beyond.
The life-light burns inside me
To sing to you this song;
To sing with you this song;
To sing to you your... song.

Hit me right in the feels.

Figured this was the best place to post this..

14 is a quest-grinder, like warcraft. However 14 only has enough quests to level one job, and even then, it's not quite enough. You find yourself chasing your hunting log, or doing a few dungeons, or killing mobs to get the level to unlock a new set of quests, but whatever.

After your first job, you have a few options
  • Fate until your eyes bleed. Fateing takes all the skill abyssea worm parties ever took. XI arrived there out of desperation, there wasn't great ways to level jobs anymore for a lot of players, so that happened.

XIV is starting with it. All you do is spam damaging buttons. Bonus to you if you claim the mobs, because you get exp on death. Mages will stand where they are about to pop and just spam aoes while paladins will spam flash (it's aoe, non-damaging).

Leveling even one job like this is miserable, and it creates a battalion of people who don't know how to play their jobs. What does that sound like?

Although it's a process that needs to be endured, rather than enjoyed, I can't say I've ever felt any leveling technique, gave me levels so easily, aside from Abyssea trends, but again, XI decayed to that. It wasn't designed for it

Not to mention, most things die before you can hit them, there are that many people.

(I realize that this happens at game launches, I also realize that there are things companies can do about this like scaling the battles, or limiting the number of participants).

  • Dungeons are good for the entry level for them, because you can keep a decent exp chain going and chains their give great rewards. Everything is equal to the entry level, so if you go in one level higher, no chain bonus. Dungeons are are about 1/4 the speed of fates and, suffering all the same problems of WoW's random dungeon finder (tanks/healers get a fast queue) and more (4 man parties means that for it to be better, dps:healer/dps:tank population ratio w would have to approach 2:1). While a lot of people will level tanks and healers, a lot of people dislike the responsibility and the blame and so won't actually touch them.

It's the same company that has tormented us for years, you could give them a guaranteed derby winner and they'll shoot it in the leg before the start of the race.

Better, once you reach 50, you get to sit in a queue because 3 weeks into launch, SE can't host enough instance copies for the instances to get premade groups in without a wait. This problem will get worse as more people reach level cap, not better. More failing, only one instance is worth doing because it drops the top-tier tokens to buy your relic gear.

I personally just took off my rose colored nostalgia glasses. Some kid on an internet forum was always telling me that those stale old final fantasies were nothing compared to what I remembered them being.

I kid, I kid.

Seriously though: I got hacked, spent two months away from game. I came back feeling insurmountably behind (like... OMG ILL NEVER CATCH UP). I then proceeded to get every piece of gear I wanted, fully upgraded myself, and cleared the entirety of the new content I had missed out on IN LESS THAN A WEEK.

Final Fantasy XI has always been shitty about content updates and new stuff being worthwhile. The old gear still being a sidegrade gave you incentive to grind out old content still to obtain old gear. They killed that in one stroke. I could literally reactivate once a year for 1-2 weeks, beat the game (sad for an MMO) and then *** off for another 50 weeks. That shows how monumentally stupid the current direction is.

Hm that is true, but a lot of modern MMO are like that. Can people honestly say they would have stuck around with the old model of HNM camping or ages of low drop rates in sea/sky? This way would have worked with faster content being pumped out. Or something like working towards a new mythic type weapon or something. I was mainly referencing the guy who posted earlier saying people who stick around only do so because they are losers lol.

Oh, i agree with that. I think they just went too much too fast. To sustain a gear "trampoline" (f treadmill, they go leaps and bounds) they would have to release content as often as the playerbase beats it. If you're going to steal a page from someone else's book, you better at least know how to finish the story.

I don't think that's a fair analogy. Not many people who quit FFXI or went to FFXIV are telling FFXI players that they're wrong, they're mostly saying that FFXI just wasn't the game they fell in love with anymore. In fact, most have said clearly that if you still love FFXI, good for you.

You're acting like XI didn't find itself in a good spot with the shift Abyssea had upon the dynamic of the game. It was the overpowering aspects of Abyssea like RR/Apoc/infinibrews that ruined everything along with bring the HNMLS' low. SE could never find the balance between something fun and rewarding in a short period of time with soulcrushing rates.

I think most people were quite content with Emp requirements and the Abyssean changes brought alot of people back to XI before the era of Voidwatch returned to status quo only this time with mindless zergs on everything.

What made XI was the horizontal progression and the minute the game tried to change its competitive advantage to the ho hum ladder system was the moment XI stopped being itself entirely.

Gearswaps and collecting gear from every which part of the world to perfect builds is what Final Fantasy XI should be remembered for.
