Thats more to do with the enemies being tougher, not the "battle system". You have to think just as quickly and come up with a strategy damn fast when Omega weapon is spamming Terra Break on you in FF8. Granted he is a mega mega mega boss lol, but if the random battles were tougher in general you would not have been able to just hack your way through blindly.

In FFXIII you will do fights and be like man that fight was a tough bosst fight, then you will realize not that's a normal mob in this area. Gogo King Behemoths.

I have my gun's motherboard settings where if i tap the trigger more than 3 times fast it ramps. Some people hate/dislike a setting like that but i'll take pop shots at people but if i see you running you're *** toast lol.
