It's about learning minds (or the essence of a person really, in their own eyes.) Learning how flavin thinks, why he thinks that way. The goal is just to learn more about thought processes and how to tailor tools for each individual so they are equipped to heal; if you or I were stuck facing some terrible trauma like a broken arm severity, only mental trauma.
Just like on a physical level you would tailor a drug to someone's specific DNA if they had a serious genetic disease etc

I was watching one of those 'food paradise' shows on Travel Channel the other day and a dude said he had just come back to eating meat from being a vegetarian and the burger they were showing was his first meal since. So, apparently it can be cured. Dunno if being vegan can be cured or if that was just a Hollywood thing they did in the Scott Pilgrim movie.
