Let's pair every FF with a good drink and/or hors d'oeuvres!
FFI: Screwdriver. Starter drink, simple, but effective.
FFII: Sapporo. Hard to get outside of Japan for a long time, and ultimately not worth the hassle or hype

The remakes got a little better, but it's still a dreary story with a broken combat/skill system. FFVI - Champagne

FF: A white fruit wine, possibly peach, and a veggie tray. Something light to get you started.
FFII & III: I'll defer to FFIV: A stout. Guinness at least, but preferably a craft brew that's heavier still. A robust, thick brew with which to properly toast the foundation of most of my generation's FF love. Pair it with a good mixed nut blend, something lightly salted and lacking peanut filler. FFV: Port and some aged cheese with wheat crackers. Not for everyone, but if you like it, you'll get your money's worth. FFVI: Sake and sushi. Because so many Japanophiles claim this is their favorite game, but I just don't like it that much despite really wanting to, much like this food/drink combo. FFVII: A good red wine, I recommend a reasonably-priced Spanish rioja, and a slice of good pizza. Because they're both classics that may not be the absolute best offering, but by damn you'll never go wrong with them either. FFVIII: Busch light and popcorn, because this game is really only worthwhile for acting like a frat boy making fun of emo dudes and ogling the female characters. FFIX: Scotch and dark chocolate. Sophisticated upgrades to the Jack and Hershey's of your younger years but you can savor them a little more now and appreciate the subtleties. FFX: Yuengling and hot dogs, like a day at the ballpark, because I'm going to spend all my time playing Blitzball. FFXI: Bourbon, with a side of bourbon. Because Jesus *** that idiot just slug shotted Nidhogg from the *** end and now you're getting tells from an applicant who really wants to join but your members don't like him and he can't figure out why. FFXII: A Cuba Libre and a good hamburger, because a sky pirate's life is a life of simple, good pleasures. FFXIII: Tequila until we forget this ever happened. FFXIV: Coffee and donuts because much like people at AA abstain from alcohol, I abstain from this game. Anna Ruthven said: » FFXIII Trilogy - We're on the same page about XIII, you and I. I disagree with your take on FFIII. While the story is fairly bland, the gameplay is pretty fun. Lotsa classes to have fun with. Surely not the best, but lumping it with goddamn FFII is too harsh imo.

My least favorite of the older FFs would probably be 5, in the GBA version I played the encounter rate was cranked up way too high. The job system was nice but the encounter rate made the game unfun to me.
5 had a diverse job system and was pretty for its era. The game really wasn't that good. Which is probably why FFVI, Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3 are the standouts of that period.

Remember there's the "hard to find for a long time" aspect to it also, so II and III get lumped together in a lot of ways that may be fair or not, especially to those of us whose first experience with FFIV was as "Final Fantasy II" on the SNES. Never pick the Brave Blade. Always go with the Chicken Knife. After about 35 minutes of playtime in V, it'll probably be maxed.
Excluding spinoffs and mmos, for me it's:
9 > 6 > 4 > 10 > 8 > 12 > 7 > 3 > 5 > 1 > 2 > 13. But I heart 'em all. edit: I know having 8 so high might be strange for many; but like with most things the first one is always special, and for me 8 was the first FF. Ketchup is red...and...how did you even...
Maybe European ketchup sucks. I don't know. Try this. My rankings of my second through fifth or so alter based on my mood at any given time, but right now we'll say:
9 > 4 > 12 > 7 > 10 > 6 > 1 > 8 > 5 > 2/3 >>>> 13 Also, I'll change up Dance Party Friday and throw in some show tunes, because while the King's away the World's Worst Jester™ will play.

My PSP went all gothic refusing to accept any electricity... a sad day.
As for FF ranking 10, 9, 7, 11, 12, 4, 13, 5, 6, 3, 8,1, 2. outside of ff2 I enjoyed them all. 6-7-12-10-8-9-4-13-3-5-1-2
while not having directly play 4-5-9-10, i know their story and music. 8's level scaling sucked, would have ranked higher without this. Maybe we won't agree on the favourite; or on all of the others for that matter; but if there's one thing we'll all agree with is that FFII sucked balls lol.
forgot to add 5 to my list.
the ones I never got to play or enjoy, (especially at their prime) would prolly have ranked higher. while kinda dont agree 7 should be that high in my list, it was what got me into Final Fantasy in the 1st place, and the 1st one to actually finish. lol 9-1-4-6-7-12-10-8-5-13-3-2
If we count the MMOs, then XI takes the top spot. XIV 1.0 is between 8 and 10, and ARR is between 12 and 10. Doesn' even matter as long as we enjoyed our time playing them. Except for II of course.
edit: I see 9 ranking high often, too bad SE doesn't care about 9 as we do... FFV is my favorite, I could replay that game so many times and in so many ways. I think one of its strong points is that it doesn't take itself as seriously as the others do.
Haven't played them all, but: 5 > 12 International > 6 and 7 > 8 and 9 > 10 woah, almost sequential |
