Edit: Honestly though. I saw little hype for it until very near its release, but I also don't pay a lot of attention to media, so...eh.
I enjoyed it a bunch.
Edit2: Though even I am getting tired of it being talked about as the first R-rated comic book movie when there have been roughly a metric *** before it.

I can go along with that, actually.
But at the same time, I feel like that's almost part of the charm. He was never meant to become as big of a character as he has been, there's just something undeniably fun about him. Anyone taking him, the movie, or any book he's in too seriously are really missing the point. As Nik pointed out before, he's far from the first or most original character of his stripe, but he's managed to outshine the others somehow. Just something about him caught on and has grown through the years, and did even before the internet became the vehicle for that with a lot of characters, which I think is kinda neat.

it doesn't bother me that he strayed away from his original... character, a bad *** assassin who would not shut up, into what he is now.
breaking the 4th wall for lolz can get boring fast, and feel (thanks to the ever growing hype and following) the writing and jokes and everything else is just being forced or abused, like you said, causing him to get faar more attention that what he should.

gamestop will be having an "anime sales" which means old overhyped shows merchandise, tho I am interested in picking the latest Tales of _ game for 20ish.

i think what they mean is the first rated R movie based from a comic to do this well. Like $132M for an opening weekend is unheard of even for a comic adapted movie.
Closest movie to that was Matrix Reloaded at $91M

300 - $70M
Watchmen - $55M
Blade II - $32M
Constantine - $29M
