I was told I have to either keep my door open or put a sign on my door "please knock" when I close it, because people assume I'm not here when it's closed instead of knocking to find out.

...Seriously?

Standard operating procedure for closed supervisor doors where I am.

And our supervisors have big windows to look into to see if they're there. But generally they tell us "do not interrupt" or "go ahead and knock then come in, just focusing on something or other" or whatever.

They frown on having doors closed here as well. I don't think it's uncommon. I'd say it depends on how much you have to interact with other people. Plus if you have your door closed all the time people just think you're goofing off or sleeping. When people have doors closed at places I've worked its usually interpreted as one big do not disturb sign.

I love those people that leer into the windows to check if someone is there and then they lock eyes with the person in the office and it gets super akward... gets me every time.

closed doors here are a sign to *** off until said door is open.

I close it for conference calls or if I don't want to be bothered. light on means I'm here, light off, no.

It's a great system.

I can't say I've ever had that particular experience with my supervisors. Not through the window anyhow.

I try to avoid eye contact because I get the feeling I make people uncomfortable frequently.

My wife has quoted Douglas Adams frequently to explain this to me.

Quote:
There was something very slightly odd about him, but it was difficult to say what it was. Perhaps it was that his eyes didn't blink often enough and when you talked to him for any length of time your eyes began involuntarily to water on his behalf. Perhaps it was that he smiled slightly too broadly and gave people the unnerving impression that he was about to go for their neck.

He struck most of the friends he had made on Earth as an eccentric, but a harmless one.

There hasn't been a sufficient amount of messed up topics in P&R for her to come on and *** about P&R and she knows how she should just avoid it but she has to tell us everytime anyways...

Problem with an open door policy is that there is a lobby where random people sit at right outside my office. In fact, there is a guy sitting out there now. Plus there is a lot of noise going on. Door beeping when people enter, other people talking, puppies drowning, it's distracting. So I guess I just need to tell everyone that it is a knock first policy. Might work. Or I'll just make that damn sign and be done with it. I just feel like the sign will invite people to knock...

Sold is such an ugly word. I prefer readjusted the values of the kingdom in order to rectify slight economical mishaps from the past. I hope you all speak Mandarin.

Sadly, I actually got the best one... There are other offices but they are getting rented out...

Long story which I don't really feel like getting into because it pisses me off.

I actually just did wave because the lights in my office are on a censor, so I had to wave so they turned on lol. It looked like I was waving at him.

maybe get a sign with a little magnet marker to which you can affix to boxes marked 'in / out' then if you don't want to be bothered you can mark yourself as 'out'?

At least you get socialization.

I sit by a window where I can see the old shitheap house I used to live in. It actually works pretty well as motivation to keep working well and not go back to living in a place where the landlord values the $50 he saves on not fixing the hardwired fire alarm system more than the safety of 8 tennants.

Actually yes. If your sign only says "please knock" people would think they're helping you by knocking when passing by!

Maybe it should read "please knock if you want to come in"!

Personalize them, though. I suggest, "BUGGER OFF" and "PLEASE ENTER to see ME!"

I'm just wondering how still you have to be for how long that the lights go off like that. Takes 30 minutes of someone not being in their office here and I don't think I've ever seen that happen where it goes off with the person in there lol.
