Tried Googling a picture of roaches dive-bombing from trees in The South. Couldn't make it past the introductory pictures of species of cockroaches in The South.

I don't recall ever actually seeing a cockroach before in my adventures to date but maybe that's because I stay out of rat infested ***holes as habit...
I didn't develop that good instinct until I had children of my own & thought "by god you fool, how would you feel if you had a dad & he was caught HERE"

Up in our climate roaches are universally a sign of squalor.
In the south they're a sign of it...being the south.

It's still squalor if you seem them indoors. That's one thing I definitely do not miss about apartment life - even if you're fine, your neighbors probably aren't.

Hmmm. I dunno. I've heard from people in the south who I know are OCD-level (diagnosed) about cleanliness and they still get them from time to time.

Certainly possible. The farther south you go, the worse it gets. If you have them indoors in Nashville though, you're either the problem, or live too close to the problem.
