Yeah. When I was shopping for a very specific car I had a bunch of people who didn't have what I wanted, but contact me for weeks afterward trying to upsell me and it was just like, "look you stupid ***, you didn't have what I was shopping for, so get. the ***. away."
I despise comission sales, that ***should be illegal. It leads to nothing but bad business practices in my experience.

Yeah, well. I can play mindgames pretty well.
I just don't like doing it and it makes me feel dirty and angry.
I'm just straight forward. I look til I find the exact car I want and decide on a fair value for my trade in. I then go in and say what I plan on doing and the amounts I'll settle for. I do all of that within respectable ranges for both vehicles and I always end up paying right around where I deem is fair. That being said if you aren't willing to walk away the salesmen will be brutal.

In the case of the car I was buying I ended up getting quite a lot of features for free because I didn't want them. This was back in 2012 when the Chevy Sonic first debuted. They didn't make the turbo in an automatic sedan for the first half of the product run. I wanted the turbo in an automatic sedan and I wanted it to be blue.
There was literally one in the entire country for sale among authorized Chevy dealers, it was in like...South Dakota, iirc, and they wouldn't trade it to my dealer for anything.
So the dealer had a nicer Sonic available in the crystal red tincoat (which is an upgrade cost), but isn't the color I wanted. It was also the LTZ, w/ sun roof, all weather mats, and a few other cosmetic/utility upgrades. But I just kept telling him "Yeah, but none of it is actually something I wanted, so stop trying to pitch it as selling me an upgrade."
Eventually they just gave it to me for the price of the other one. ^^;
It helped I was buying at the end of the model year and they wanted to move inventory, I'm sure.
