Went to Taco Bell and ordered 48 tacos. They were less than amused.

Tacos were good though.

In other news my lawn is still there, uncut. I will have to scold my lawnmower later today for being lazy. Also it's time for an afternoon coffee while I continue to sort all the crap I tossed into my computer room over the last month.

We have no intern, though I did pawn off my most monotonous tasks on someone else... so I guess she is the closest to an intern that we have.

Identifying the source of perytons at the Parkes radio telescope
Quote:
ABSTRACT
“Perytons” are millisecond-duration transients of terrestrial origin, whose
frequency-swept emission mimics the dispersion of an astrophysical pulse that has
propagated through tenuous cold plasma. In fact, their similarity to FRB 010724 had
previously cast a shadow over the interpretation of “fast radio bursts,” which otherwise
appear to be of extragalactic origin. Until now, the physical origin of the dispersionmimicking
perytons had remained a mystery. We have identified strong out-of-band
emission at 2.3–2.5 GHz associated with several peryton events. Subsequent tests revealed
that a peryton can be generated at 1.4 GHz when a microwave oven door is
opened prematurely and the telescope is at an appropriate relative angle.
Radio emission
escaping from microwave ovens during the magnetron shut-down phase neatly
explain all of the observed properties of the peryton signals. Now that the peryton
source has been identified, we furthermore demonstrate that the microwaves on site
could not have caused FRB 010724. This and other distinct observational differences
show that FRBs are excellent candidates for genuine extragalactic transients.

Is it bad that the Ikea/couples jokes are completely a true, universal experience among most couples?

EDIT: Or is it because of Ikea jokes that couples experience the pains of shopping at Ikea together? Huh? Huh?

Ah, XKCD. Where else will you arbitrarily find a reference to something like Sexual Cannibalism in Orb-Weaving Spiders: An Economic Model

Quote:
Abstract. -- Sexual cannibalism in orb-weaving spiders commonly takes place before copulation, even among virgin females. This behavior is curious because, although the female may obtain a nutritious meal, she risks remaining unmated. We present an economic model that accounts for sexual cannibalism by virgin females using stochastic dynamic programming.
...
The model also suggets a novel form of selection pressure on male body size.

my last Ikea shopping experience went fine, but mostly because the only thing that we saw that we wanted we didn't have a vehicle with us to transport it, so we decided on nothing, but overall it was an interesting experience. (closest Ikea is like 2 hours away).

Nope. Which has a greater gravitational pull on me: the Sun, or spiders? Granted, the Sun is much bigger, but it is also much further away, and as I learned in high school physics, the gravitational force is proportional to the square of the distance.

Denmark-fourth-best-place-to-be-a-mother

Quote:
Denmark scored highly because of its maternal death rates, though those rates are higher in Denmark than the other Nordic countries. While Danish women have a 1 in 12,000 lifetime chance of dying in pregnancy or childbirth, the odds were even longer in Sweden, Norway and Finland. In Iceland, 1 in 11,500 women is at risk of dying during childbirth or pregnancy.

By contrast American women have a one in 1,800 risk of maternal death, the worst level of risk of any developed country in the world.
...
Save the Children also looked at infant mortality rates in the world's 24 wealthiest capitals and noted that while Copenhagen had fewer than three deaths per 1,000, that number was below two in both Oslo and Stockholm. Washington DC had the highest rate at 7.9.

Thought: Have you considered the death rates in the U.S. are possibly linked into the drug issues we're discussing "over there"? I suspect they are not unrelated topics.

Oh God! Are you in social work, CPA-related? One of my friends who got her BA in Social Work gave it three years before it depressed her so much that she started waiting tables/bartending again.

I've heard stories.
