While I don't generally cut-and-switch when dining with other people (the 1% of the time I'm not eating in a dark corner by myself ;_;), I don't really see why that is considered "improper". Call me American, but honestly if it's more comfortable then why does it matter? I could never fit in with high society, I find prim and proper to be dull and a waste of time. Maybe I'm just uncouth. Maybe I'm just low brow. Or maybe, just maybe, I look at people for things other than how they hold utensils, how they dress, or how they speak.
Of course, being a just plain slob is completely different, I mean within reason.
